"Thinkpad UltraSlim USB DVD Burner" Model LN-8A6NH (FRU 03X7452) Write Errors

2021-09-13, 18:09 PM

Two Memorex "LightScribe 16X" DVD-Rs wasted because of "write error" reported about 3/4 of the way through different large data compilations (BurnAware Premium 14.7).  The files that were written (at least a lot of them) binary compare correctly, and the unit reads data disks fine.  (I just burned one of these compilations with an old Samsung external burner, same software, and it worked fine; so I guess the problem is not with the software nor the compilations.)  Anybody else seen this problem?

BTW, this external burner came with no instructions whatsoever and a weird 3-ended hydra of an extension connector.  What, if anything, am I supposed to do with that? -- JCW2

That Y cable is needed if you are using USB 2.0 ports. It takes two USB 2.0 ports to power the burner.

As with most gadgets these days, the instructions are available online.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

Hello JCW2!

Greetings

Is this an external DVD burner? If not, can you provide the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK or 20UD000BUS) from the sticker usually under the case?

This would help us detail more about your machine variant while keeping the confidentiality of your serial number.

What is the OS version and the BIOS version running on your machine?

Any changes made before this issue came up?

Let us know.

That's helpful.  (I actually have two USB 3.1 ports.)  I also have USB-C ports.  Can I just use a single USB->USB-C adapter, or is that not enough power either? -- JCW2

Jwes -- Yes it's an external burner.

The OS is Windows 10 [20H2].

I don't know how to find the BIOS version.  Does it matter?

No changes.  This is the first time I've tried to burn this large a data compilation. -- JCW2

All -- I cannot find these instructions anywhere (especially for the Y connector and when it's required).  Please advise. -- JCW2

Here is how to check the BIOS:

I guess it is no longer necessary as bananaman has your query covered.
