Thinkvision Pro2840m flickering at 3840x2160 60Hz

2015-01-20, 12:31 PM

I have just installed a Pro2840m display on a brand-new Dell T5810 workstation (with AMD W5100 graphics card), and the Pro2840 display flickers really badly when setting to the resolution recommended by Windows (3840x2160 @ 60Hz).

The flicker goes away if I reduce the refresh rate to 30Hz.

The monitor is running microcode TN3.01.  Windows drivers are up to date (AMD 14.301.1010), and system is running Windows 8.1, with 8GB memory

Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to the Lenovo community. Out of experience I would suggest you connect only the (or one) Pro2840m to your W5100 using the supplied DP cable (by Lenovo) to test whether the fault is with the Lenovo. Obviously don't forget to be running the latest ISV certified drivers published for the particular software you are planning to use found here.

As a side note: I wonder when was your display purchased, because microcode LN3.01 was the very first version these displays were shipped with in June 2014. The latest version which I have heard of for the Pro2840m was at LN3.07 which has addressed a list of serious issues (see here or here for examples). Sadly firmwares for these displays are not released to public, for upgrading your firmware you will have to contact Lenovo support and request an RMA.

Don't forget to post back your findings so we all can benefit. :smileywink:

I have exactly the same issue. How did you manage this?

Thinkvision Pro2840m flickering at 3840x2160 60Hz

2015-06-30, 4:36 AM

Yesterday i received two Pro2840m. The left one startet Minutes after switching on to flicker. After reading in the support forum I changed the refresh rate to 30hz. Now it stoped flickering but this could not be the real solution.

Have replaced my monitor under warranty and can confirm that newest microcode LN3.11 does not resolve the flickering issue.

I ordert two of the 2840m, the right one works since the first minute @60Hz without any trouble, the left one started flickering @60Hz, on 30Hz everything is fine. So I replaced it under warrenty. The "new" left one has exactly the same issue. So im waiting for the next warrentyreplacement.

@SeniorTete: How are your 2 screens connected to your computer running both at 4K@60HZ?

Both are connected via Displayport. After hours of testing i found out that more Displays increases the frequency of flickering.

I understand. 4K@60HZ can't be fed in any other way to them. But what I meant, is:

  • What is your GPU model and type?
  • Which outputs are in use on the GPU?
  • Which inputs are you using on the displays, DP or mDP?
  • What are the resolutions you have in use on the display's connected?
  • Are you using the supplied DP1.2->DP1.2 cable that came with the Display?

It also helps to know if any of your displays have Microcode revision LN3.06 or lower?

I used the supplied ones and many different others. The only difference was more flickering with longer cables. But it isnt a cable-only problem. The longer cable works without any problems at my notebook. So it looks like a combination of cablelength, graficcard and mayby count of devices plugged to the graficcard.

Meanwhile i have diffent microcode revisions tested (3.06 + 3.10) but there is no diffence in the flickering behavior.
