Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 / USB audio and DPC latency problems

2020-05-26, 18:52 PM

Hi,

Recently I added to my ThinkPad family a Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2. I like it (especially the DisplayPorts and Ethernet my X1 Carbon 6th is missing), but I've got a couple of problems with it:

1. Audio output on dock makes pops and cracks (like some DPC latency is terrible). Same applies to my USB audio interfaces attached to the dock, they're fine when connected to computer, but crackle when connected to the dock.

2. It seems that while dock is connected my DPC latency is much worse than without it. I use LatencyMon to debug it and the culprit is Wdf01000.sys, it interrupts more than for a second or even two. Without dock everything is fine.

Any tips and clues to get it working?

Thanks

Hi,

You should try to disable the CPU Power Management in the Bios. It worked for me (RME Digiface usb and Lenovo P53).

Kind Regards,

Damien

@dv59 I have it disabled for 'on power', that's how I got decent DPC latency.

but when I connect the dock, it all gets worse.

just to be clear -- you're using your interface connected to the port of Thunderbolt 3 dock gen 2?

Rme usb 2.0 interface connected to the Thunderbolt Dock gen 2. With CPU Power management enabled : horrible ! With CPU Power management disabled : it's fine !

hm, I went to BIOS and my 'CPU power management' was enabled.

after a reboot my DPC latency with the dock is still unacceptably bad (wdf01000.sys still interrupts for more that 1.5 seconds).

but it seems like that with this setting disabled USB ports on dock are more stable.

however, my X1 Carbon gets very hot with it disabled, so I'll have to disable it and hope this is something that can be fixed/worked around by other means.

I hope this can be fixable without buying another brand of dock.

I think it's a problem with the thunderbolt protocol. Try the dock on an usb-c port (without thunderbolt). You will lose some features but it may work for audio.

Or you should probably plug your audio device directly to  a usb port on the laptop. On the P53, it works fine without any bios change.

thanks for suggestions, it's not a problem with Thunderbolt protocol as I have two Thunderbolt audio interfaces and both work with this laptop good and with minimal latency (under 3ms round trip).

I'm not able to check the USB-C option as both USB-C ports on my X1C6 are Thunderbolt.

yes, the USB sound interface works perfect when plugged into laptop's port, but not in the dock's (kinda defeating the purpose of the dock), that's the problem. other problem is that audio interface built in dock is useless. if Lenovo folks would not be able to fix it, I think, I'll get a CalDigit dock which is reported to be okay.

Re:Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 / USB audio and DPC latency problems

today a system update arrived: Integrated Firmware for Thunderbolt Function (Windows 10 Version 1709 or Later) - 10 [64] - 17.0.0.12-N23TF22W

in release notes it's mentioned that dock compatibility should be improved.

I've tested it and can say:

  1. built-in to dock audio is as bad as it used to be before
  2. USB-connected to dock audio interface still had problems, maybe less than before, but it's still unusable.

I use the following procedure for testing it all:

  1. launch LatencyMon and start the test
  2. launch foobar2000 and start the music
  3. open web browser or some other tasks

if I experience pops and drop-outs that means the audio connected to dock doesn't work properly
