Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

2019-08-05, 10:31 AM

Yep, exactly the same problem here. All drivers updated.

Thunderbolt 3 dock with X1 Extreme, and 2 x HP Elitedisplay E273q. The only thing I haven't tried is using Display Port for both monitors instead of HDMI.

I'm about to go through the email support to see if I can get some luck there.

For what this set up cost, it really is rubbish I have to reboot the laptop to get something that is useable. I use a lot of 3D cad software and its simply not useable after the first start.

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

The laptop is great, this dock is HORRIBLE. Is there a simple graphics benchmark or profile app that can be used to see the difference between when it is lagging and when it isn't? I'm also wondering if CPU throttling is happening. Is there an easy way to see that?

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

I found another thread about this dock recommending plugging in both the USB3.0 plug as well as the regular power adapter to the laptop.

So that should be power adapter to the dock, power adapter to the laptop, and USB3.0 connecting the two.

It doesn't help the lag issue, although it does help the CPU throttling. Turns out the USB3.0 thunderbolt spec doesn't allow enough power across the line to power the laptop, so the laptop self throttles down to 1.0 GHz. After plugging in the power supply my CPU speed is back up to 4.06 GHz.

So not only do we not have a solution to the lag and stuttering, but we also have to plug in two cables instead of one. This is apparently a well known limitation of thunderbolt, but I didn't know about it. Hopefully this helps someone else in the future.

That would be a different issue. If you have the "Workstation" version of the dock then it has a 230w plug and a single cable that combines the power connector and Thunderbolt connection.

Same problem here for dozens of P1s in our office.  Bad lag after undocking / redocking, even sometimes just after sitting for a while.  A temporary workaround seems to be killing "dwm.exe" - often it'll speed back up after that.  But that doesn't always work.

Has anyone called Lenovo on this yet?  We've called them, but were unable to get anywhere.

I can confirm leaving the lid open does work.  Not a bad temporary workaround as long as you're not running 2 external monitors.

+1 AstraIT

I confirm this bizarre behavior. I run a X1 extreme + workstation dock with 4 monitors connected to it. (3 1080p via dock, and 1 2K via HDMI).

If I leave the lid open, thus running the Laptop(4K) monitor in 5 monitors.... setup... it works fine.

If I disable the laptop monitor however, even with the lid on, it lags terribly.

This is bizarre behavior.

To summarize.

1. Fresh reboot - no lag.
2. Undock - no lag
3. Dock - Screen down, Lots of lag, System process jumps to 5-10% forever.
4. UnDock - No lag.
5. ReDock, but screen up - no lag.
6. Disable Laptop Screen in Display Settings - lots of lag
7. Re-enable laptop screen in display Settngs - no lag.

Bizarre.

I bet my money on this being a software or firmware issue with Lenovo docks.

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

I am having the same issue.

Have the following setup purchased when last 30 days:

- X1 Extreme Laptop

- Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 (230W)

- LG34GL750-B

Display has extremely bad lag especially with video playback and gaming. For video playback the stuttering seems to go away if I watch in full screen. Not so for video game. No issues when monitor is hooked directly into laptop.

Called Lenovo support about it and they told me they can't guarentee compatibility between dock and monitor since it is not Lenovo. They sent me a replacement dock, but unfortunately it did not fix the issue.

Does anyone have a Lenovo monitor and can confirm they are issue free with this? Any recommendations for a lenovo monitor that is 27" or larger and can do 144hz w/g-sync?

Is this something Lenovo thinks they will be able to fix?

I have two ThinkVision monitors that were purchased as a bundle along with the P1 and the dock.

I am also having these issues, exactly like others have posted.

Exact same problem! Can't find a fix other than to leave my monitor lid open as well.
