Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

2019-10-29, 16:50 PM

We have P1's and usb-c gen 2 docks here, I know the dock doesn't supply enough power for the laptop to operate so we have users plug in their travel charger as well.  Our users are experiencing slowness/lag/etc. while docked so we went into the bios in config>power> change the mode for battery to maximum performance.  We have gotten good results thus far.

I am also having the video lag issue with my P53 and the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation. My solution has been to simply restart the P53 and everything seems to work fine after that, although I am not stressing the video system with my normal workflow.

I am so disappointed with Lenevo. This is the last time I ever buy anything from this company. After spending so much money on the top-end X1 and their top end docking station, all I got is a bugged system, where I either have to restart windows or kill dwm.exe process to experience normal windows behaviour without any lag, freezing, etc. No help from Lenovo, all products on full guarantee. So disappointed!

This is really sad to not hear any input from lenovo given how common this issue seems to be. Really wish they would have some input.

In the same boat, not sure why Lenovo isn't able to answer about this, but I am going to escalate to my reps about this. We need some answers on this.

I agree Lenovo needs to do more but this actually looks like an issue that we need to take up with NVidia. In a previous reply on this thread was the link:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/geforce-graphics-cards/5/257428/laptop-1070-external-monitor-stutter/

It seems to be an issue with the hybrid mode and that is not specific to Lenovo. I just wish Lenovo didn't provide this solution in this high end laptop if it was known to have issues like this.

This is clearly a hybrid graphics issue. However, going to nvidia to try and fix this is like going directly to Takata to get your car's airbags fixed.

interesting enough, I just got the gen 2 p1 and it also has the same issue. P1 gen 1 has just come out with Optimus specific drivers, haven't tried it yet, but my guess is, they trying to fix it. Previously drivers were delivered as intel in one package and nvidia in another. Maybe this new Optimus package will solve the issue: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p1-type-20md-20me/downloads/driver-list/

Hi guys,

This is a known issue, and Lenovo should be familiar with it. There is a firmware update for dock, which can be found here. BUT. There is another issue, where update firmware tool does not see dock connected. Anyway, stick around as this can be solved soon. One more workaround I found is to keep laptop display running. That way, there is no lag on external displays.

Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

Hello,

I too have this problem with a P1 and Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2.

The symptoms I notice in Windows 10 is that the System process starts to see a higher than normal CPU load. Using SysInternals ProcessExplorer, I can see that the System process is repeatedly/constantly calling the PoFXReportDevicePoweredOn function (as seen on the Threads view of ProcessExplorer). This appears to be a part of the Windows power management subsytem.

When my system is not experiencing the symptons, this function is not called repeatedly.

I'm curious if anyone else sees a similar problem with the System process since no-one else has mentioned this?
