Re: Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

Lag issues resolved but new issue created.  If I try to play  a video from chrome (say amazon prime or nbc sports), the monitor goes black and only way to restore is to undock , make sure video is stopped and then redock.

I just saw there was another update to the nvidia and intel drivers. Just updated that one and things seem better but need to do more testing.

Quick and easy fix until Lenovo gets their act together.

Go to device manager, select your onboard video display adapter "UHD Graphics"

Disable it, and re-enable it.

This will fix it right up for you. Unfortunately you need to do this all the time.

My new P1 Gen2 ThinkPad and Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock has this same issue.  Spent almost a day with Lenovo technical support.  They had no idea what was going on.  They sent me a new dock and have offered to replace my motherboard.  But, this issue seems to be long standing.  Too bad.  Beside this, I really like the laptop and doc.  But, I dock and undock a lot, so this is really, really annoying.

Re:Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen 2 and Thinkpad P1 lag

I seemed to resolve the lag on by P1 Gen1 when connected to a dock, by disabling the onboard Intel graphics in the bios and relying on the discrete Nvidia graphics. This is terrible for battery endurance, but that's less of an issue for me.

However I still experience random unresponsiveness and random undetected USB devices when connecting to (multiple) Lenovo docks.

Disabling the onboard video display driver solves the lagging in games for me, thanks!

(In my case, this is the Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 on my Dell XPS 15 laptop, and the docking station in question is the ThinkPad USB 3.0 Ultra Dock.)

Connecting the monitor directly to the laptop, and not through the docking is also a workaround.

This could be a hint towards finally solving this with a proper driver update, Lenovo? :)

Hi!

This is easy to understand : the discrete display adapter is responsible for external displays but coordinates with the Intel graphic adapter. Disabling it removes the need for this bugged interaction. So, the solution involves Intel, nVidia and Lenovo.

Also, note that Thunderbolt 3 is used as a transport mechanism for the content generated by the cards. It is connected to the PCIe bus.

Anyone found any solution to this yet?

Like I mentioned in earlier posts, updating the drivers (I did this earlier in the year/pre-Covid. Nvidia put out a fix end of last year) fixed the issue for me. Don't have any more lags.  I have 3 monitors and docked and have both video cards enabled.  Before the update, I could not do anything. The lag was really bad. I had to disable the Intel card to function.  Make sure your updates are current
