USB-C Compatibility (including Power Delivery)

2018-03-20, 9:40 AM

Hello everybody,

since I received several questions concerning this topic, I had to search for answers.

I think it will be helpful for people looking for answers too on some of these features.

There a couple of Lenovo Displays have USB-C support, and are even able to charge your Notebook!

These are current ThinkVision Monitors that have USB-C (new models are coming sooner or later, so this might be incomplete):

  • ThinkVision X1
  • ThinkVision P27h & P24h
  • ThinkVision X24 Pro (*doesn't include the USB hub)
  • T24m (new!)

There are some limitations to keep in mind though.

Here are the details I found and tried to consolidate.

Please feel free to add your input as a comment below (this list is by no means final and complete, and there are always new models coming, that I have not tested or not received these infos yet)...

  • USB 3.0       speed =   5 Gbps
  • USB 3.1       speed = 10 Gbps
  • TBT              Thunderbolt 3
  • DP                DisplayPort 1.2 (alternate mode)
  • PD                Power delivery – can be charged via USB-C

General Power Limitations:

USB 1.0/1.15 Volt0,1 A0,5 W
USB 2.05 Volt0,5 A2,5 W
USB 3.0/3.1/3.25 Volt0,9 A4,5 W
USB-BC 1.25 Volt1,5 A7,5 W
USB-Typ-C5 Volt3 A15 W
USB-PD5 - 20 Volt5 A100 W

This means, if your Notebook has a power supply less than 100W, PD should be possible.

Most ThinkPads come with 65W or 90W PSUs. The more powerful models (like P71 and P51) have 130W or bigger PSUs, and therefore need to much power... you can't use PD with these models (see table below).

I don't have time to update this list regularly, so it migh be obsolete at one time in the future.

But as long as people add there insights, it can be kept alive...

Cheers!

Hello NTEs,

please check the specs:

I Post the answer to your question here, because I have reached the limit of private messages I can post today...

The datasheet seems to be an official one, though the source isn't...

But to answer your question:

There are several accessories you can buy, that work with the chromebook.

You can find these options easily here: http://accsmartfind.lenovo.com/search?systemId=88ELC1S9999&query=&pageSize=40&pageIndex=1

Just search and filter for the items you need...

For example:

4X90L66917

Lenovo USB-C to Ethernet Adapter

4X90K86567

Lenovo USB-C to HDMI Plus Power Adapter

4X90K86568

Lenovo USB-C to VGA Plus Power Adapter

We also offer a USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter, but it is not listed as tested with the unit... so I can't gurantee 100% whether it'll work.

Sorry for that. I think it might work, at least I don't see a technical reason why it shouldn't, but it's not guranteed.

Maybe someone else has tested it?! Try posting this as a question in the forum!

Lenovo USB-C TO DISPLAYPORT Adapter  4X90Q93303

Sorry that I couldn't solve this one on the fly...

Interestingly the adapter from that document wasn't picked up by your search engine. Does that mean all usb-c to hdmi adapters would work?

Hello NTEs,

I hope you understand that we can't speak for other brands and products. Only for our own...

So even if it's quite probable that third party adapter will work, we can't vouch for the quality or full functionality of untested 3rd party options.

Re: USB-C Compatibility (including Power Delivery)

Hello rossinskiynn,

I just looked up the official setup guide for the USB-C dock ( https://support.lenovo.com/de/de/accessories/acc100348 ).

On the website there is a link to the setup poster: Setup Poster and Warranty Information

Step 2 of the description shows the port to charge your notebook/tablet (the USB-C port next to the power supply port).

The port should be able to charge units with up to 60W (even though the PSU is 90W).

On the front of the dock, there is another USB-C port and a powered USB port.

These two ports are limited: 15W and 10.5W from the USB-C port and USB 3.0 always power on port respectively .

If that doesn't work I'd recommend a hardware reset, and/or contacting the official Lenovo support.

Hi, just wanted to confirm the compatibility of my x270. I am thinking of getting an external monitor, Asus MB169, which uses a usb c connector. Will that work with the x270?

Thanks

Alan

Re: USB-C Compatibility (including Power Delivery)

Hello curryfishball,

normally we can't say anything to the compatibility of options from other brands, as we have not tested these.

According to the ASUS website the Power Consumption (Typical) is <7.5W, using a normal USB 3.0 port.

The X270 has two such ports (Two USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0, one Always On), USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 1):

http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20X270/ThinkPad_X270_Platform_Specifications.pdf

Therefore I don't se a reason why it shouldn't work.

If in doubt, you can use the powered USB port ("Always On"), as it is probably the port with "more juice"...

But like I said: Not tested... Therefore we can't guarantee it.

Dear OEM Chen,

Do you know if ThinkPad 13 supports DP alt Mode?

From an online website (Laptopmag) is state only data and charging is supported on the USB-C port.

Thank you!

Re: USB-C Compatibility (including Power Delivery)

Is the USB-C meant to deliver what it can to stabilize battery usage? I have a P27h connected to an X1 Extreme and there is no power delivery between the two. The X1 came with a 135W charger, but I have a 90W charger that came with an older laptop that does just fine, it just charges more slowly. My expectation was that USB-C would deliver the ~100W and I'd get similar performance to the 90W charger, but that isn't at all the case. In fact, battery use is REALLY high when plugged into the monitor (as in I've lost 6% while writing this message). Is this typical behavior? Other than the need for the power cable, I love the setup.

@headphones54321:

The X1 Xtreme really needs the 135W PSU.

The power output from the USB-C Port is simply too low for this model, so this situation is to be expected.

I guess you will have to continue using an additions power source...

Hello CliffBau,

according to the specs ( http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20P1/ThinkPad_P1_Platform_Specifications.pdf ), this ThinkPad has these ports: "Two USB 3.1 Gen 1 (one Always On), two USB Type-C / Thunderbolt 3, ...".

If the Thunderbolt USB-C Ports are used, then Alt Mode for video output is no problem...

(whether the two Non-Thunderbolt ports support Alt Mode, I can't tell... but that won't be relevant, right?)

Re: USB-C Compatibility (including Power Delivery)

What's about Yoga Book C930.

The PD profile is not mentioned here https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Lenovo%20Tablets%20_%20Convertibles/Yoga%20Book%20C930/Yoga_Book_C930_Platform_specs.pdf

The supplied delivered wallcharger outputs 9V/3A, if I'm refering to that https://www.st.com/content/ccc/resource/sales_and_marketing/presentation/product_presentation/group0/5a/b1/8e/6c/2b/0d/46/3c/Apec/files/APEC_2016_USB_Power.pdf/_jcr_content/translations/en.APEC_2016_USB_Power.pdf, it should be profile 3 (36W).

So my question is : does the Yogabook accept 12V input voltage (for example, from a power bank unable to deliver 9V/3A but 12V with less intensity).

I use a wallcharger delivering 9V/12V/20V at 3A, it works fine with the Yoga Book C930, but I don't know it the laptop makes use of voltage over 9V.

Best regards.

Re: USB-C Compatibility (including Power Delivery)

Honestly, I don't know for sure.

But I don't think that the Yoga Book C930 can handle more juice than advertised, and nobody will guarrantee it (not tested and certified).

Sorry, but I don't think that this question can be answered here (at least not by me).
Maybe one of our engineers might be able to answer that, but as I said, nobody will guarrantee it, so the question is probably pointless.
