Disable Intel AMT to avoid Intel ME firmware updates

2020-10-09, 19:35 PM

I was testing the Intel ME firmware update.  I used the Powershell code in the blog below as a detection method, but getting error with SMS_AMTObject.  I validated that it is checked in CM hardware inventory which appears to be by default.

I did some investigation and this recent blog posting mentions that Intel AMT support has been removed.

My plan is to just disable Intel AMT in the BIOS if not being used.  Are other IT Pros just disabling Intel AMT to avoid Intel ME firmware updates?

It may avoid some of the issues related directly to AMT; however, the Intel ME does a number of other functions beyond just AMT.  Therefore, disabling AMT will not eliminate the need to keep the ME firmware up to date.

I'm considering just not updating the firmware.  It's almost to the point where those firmware updates will need to be done manually.  There are too many issues with them.  Even when you do everything right, I just had a machine fail this morning and user had to stick a 'pin' in the bottom to get it to reset.

Doesn't happen for all computers.  Intel's name is taking a hit here.
