Enabling Virtualization on AMD ThinkPad with WMI

2020-10-21, 10:08 AM

As part of imaging, we have to enable virtualization feature in the BIOS for all clients so that Credential Guard and similar security stuff works. For Intel devices this is simple, we use the Lenovo WMI interface to set "VirtualizationTechnology" to "Enable". This works perfectly.

We have now however bought a set of AMD ThinkPad X13. In the AMD Bios, "VirtualizationTechnology" doesn't exist as a setting, it seems to use a setting called "AmdVt" instead.

But, I haven't been able to make that setting work. According to the options presented, you can set it to either "Disable" or "Auto". But, if you use WMI to set it to "Auto", it's still on "Disabled" in the BIOS itself. If you use the BIOS menu to set it to "Enabled", it's still on "Disable" according to WMI, even if all virtualization features are working.

Has anyone managed to get this setting to work on an AMD computer?

@Haravol

I will take a look at this setting to see if I can reproduce the error.  Can you confirm you are on the latest version of the BIOS?

Looks like they just released a new version yesterday. I'll upgrade to that and try again.

Same problem with the new version released yesterday (1.25). If I query WMI, it doesn't return the setting that was set in the BIOS. See below where WMI says that virtualization is disabled, but it's working in reality.

And if I use WMI to change the setting, it doesn't take.

@Haravol

I am seeing the same issue in the latest version of the BIOS.  I will take this and report it up to the appropriate team to assess and resolve.

I apologize for the inconvenience, but we do appreciate you taking the time to notify us of this issue.

***Update:  It appears that Disable in WMI = ON in BIOS and that Auto in WMI = OFF***

@Haravol

I have just found out from the relevant team that this is a reported issue and there is a fix for this in the works.  I am hoping to see a fix out around mid November, but it depends on the testing results.

It's now working correctly with the newly released BIOS 1.27
