Re: Latest X1 Carbon BIOS Hangs After Driver Installation Reboot in SCCM OSD / Will Not Join The Dom

Lunatech_Fringe,

I have not been able to replicate your issue today in our lab.  I can login to the domain here as well as no hangs in the BIOS.  I will try a few other things tomorrow and will update you then.

Regarding the BIOS hang, what happens if you upgrade the SSD's firmware?  I recall applying FWSD38 at some point, so it's possible that's the root of my problem.

For your tests, were you using the dock to PXE boot and image?

Lunatech_Fringe,

We have not updated the SSD FW that I know of, so I can try that and attempt tomorrow.

As to your other question, I deployed the system with a OL+ to Ethernet Dongle to ensure there were no issues.  Then I deployed the system on the OL+ Dock to attempt to emulate your problem.  I have not encountered anything that you have described.

I would like to confirm one thing, you have added the RTL dock ethernet drivers to your SCCM Pack you are deploying to the X1 Carbon 20FB.  Pretty sure those are there, but have to ask... :)

I added the Realtek USB FE Family Controller (version 10.13.1115.2016) to the base SCCM drivers Lenovo has posted so it could be injected with the same drivers.  The INF for this driver is rtux64w10.inf, which is for the RTL 8153.  Our boot image has the same driver.  Additionally, I added the dock drivers as an installation when installing apps.

If there's another driver I should use, I'll give that a shot.

Lunatech_Fringe,

Over the past few days, I have not been able to replicate your issues.  In regards to the BIOS hang, would it be possible to roll the BIOS on that system back to the previous version?  How many systems are you seeing it hang on?  Just one or multiple systems?

Those all seem to be the right drivers for the NIC and for the dock.   Also, our SSD was not the same model as yours and did not need that FW update.  I cant replicate that part of it.

Thx

I copied the reply from my other post and added some notes:

It mainly seems to be happening on the system I've upgraded the BIOS for.  I feel like I read something regarding the inability to roll back the BIOS (possibly related to the embedded controller), so I'll need to check that.  The laptop with the issue is running BIOS v1.24.  The other laptop I'm testing has BIOS v1.18.

How often does your team refresh the SCCM driver package?  I've noticed a lot of recent updates in the past month.  Also, regarding the SSD, the laptop exhibiting the problem is identified as Intel SSDSCKKF256H6L in Device Manager.

I tried downgrading the BIOS to v1.18.  An error displays that says the following:

"BIOS image file does not match this system.

The utility process has not completed."

Hi all,

I just wanted to let you know we received the Lenovo pass-through Ethernet adapters.  The BIOS hang and domain-join issues have disappeared.  Additionally, PXE booting has the expected speeds and is no longer slow.

Thanks for all of your help!
