Re: Lenovo YOGA X1 - Very slow PXE booting

Lunatech_Fringe and Dverbern,

So I was having a little bit of slowness, nothing like 7-15 minutes, but I was able to follow this article and see a noticable improvement in boot speed time from loading message to WinPE being up and running.

Take a look at his note at the bottom where it mentions 4096, 8192, and 16384 as possible options.  See which one may work best for your environment.

HTH,

I've tried that already, but it didn't help much.  Based on my tests so far, here are some steps that seem to work:

1)  Disconnect the dock from the laptop with the laptop powered off.

2)  Disconnect the dock's AC power.

3)  Reconnect the dock after approximately 10 seconds.

4)  Power the laptop up and PXE boot.

This corrects the issue 99% of the time.

Thanks for the link.  We've also tried adjusting those TFTP settings too, without any noticable improvement.

Do you mean these power on/off steps fix the slow PXE boot issue?

When using the dock, power cycling definitely helped with that issue.  I ended up shelving the docks for imaging at this point.  I've had better results with the USB 3.0 ThinkPad Ethernet adapter in regards to PXE booting speeds (and domain joins), but I'm waiting to see what my results will be like when we receive the pass-through Ethernet adapter today.

I'm still experiencing issues where the BIOS screen hangs after the drivers install and the system reboots.  It hasn't been the smoothest experience!

It mainly seems to be happening on the system I've upgraded the BIOS for.  I feel like I read something regarding the inability to roll back the BIOS (possibly related to the embedded controller), so I'll need to check that.

How often does your team refresh the SCCM driver package?  I've noticed a lot of recent updates in the past month.

The laptop with the issue is running BIOS v1.24.  The other laptop I'm testing has BIOS v1.18.

Hi all,

I just wanted to let you know we received the Lenovo pass-through Ethernet adapters.  The BIOS hang and domain-join issues have disappeared.  Additionally, PXE booting has the expected speeds and is no longer slow.

Thanks for all of your help!

Lunatech_Fringe,

Glad to hear that worked for you.

Dverbern,

Have you tried the OneLink+ to Ethernet dongle yet to see if it resolves your issues?
