T440s can't boot into MDT due to missing driver?

2013-12-16, 15:12 PM

I've downloaded the SCCM drivers from the Lenovo site, added them to my OOB drivers, and updated my deployment share. The machine will go through the motions to boot into the PXE image for me to apply the image, but when I get to the final step to start selecting everything it complains about network drivers being unavailable.

Re: T440s can't boot into MDT due to missing driver?

I used the same process with the T420 and T430 SCCM driver sets, and those models are able to boot without any issues. I'm starting to think I need to find a specific driver and apply it directly to the PXE WIM file, but I'm unsure of which driver is required.

What versions of MDT and WinPE are you using?  Are you booting WinPE of the same architecture as the OS you are deploying?  For instance, if you are deploying Win7 64-bit are you using 64-bit WinPE to boot?  If you are then the SCCM driver pack you imported should have the driver you need as long as you are using WinPE 3.1.  If you are booting 32-bit WinPE to deploy Win7 64-bit then you may need to get the 32-bit version of the NIC driver.  Also, did you double check the selection profile being used by the WinPE image in MDT to make sure it includes the expected drivers?

I'm using MDT 2012 and I believe WinPE 3.0. I'm deploying Windows 7 64-bit, and I'm using the WinPE x86 environment. I've included both versions of the SCCM drivers (32 and 64), and specified no duplicates. The selection profiles I have available are: Everything, All Drivers, All Drivers and Packages, All Packages, Nothing, Sample. The first three profiles have the 440 drivers selected.

I'm unable to use the WinPE x64 version, it just sits at the load screen and does nothing.

Is your Out-of-Box folder in MDT organized with subfolders for individual systems or are all drivers imported into the Out-of-Box folder?  Do you have drivers from any other systems imported?

The driver pack for T440s includes the driver for that adapter: e1d62x64.inf

It appears to be targeted to Win7, Win7 SP1, and Win8.  I just wonder if perhaps using WinPE 3.1 (Win7 SP1) would give you better results.

I'm out of the office now but if I get a chance I will try to recreate the issue when I have access to a T440s.

I have drivers for other models as well, but they're organized into folders: T420s, T430s, and T440s. However, the WinPE boot image uses all of the drivers and packages. I'm going to try out creating a selection profile using only the T440s drivers and see if that makes the difference.

I did not have this issue, but I did have an issue where the PE enviroment would not recognize anything plugged into a M93 USB port. My Win PE needed the USB 3.0 driver which was not being imported by default.

What I did (and someone showed me this) was make a separate folder in the Out-of-Box drivers area with what drivers I thought Windows PE would need. This included drivers with the Class: hdc, mouse, net, USB, etc. Not sure exactly what else you need, I threw in a lot of stuff and it did bloat my PE iso by 100+ mb.

After that, Right-click your deployment share proprerties, go to the Windows PE tab and change your Selection profile to one that just includes your Windows PE folder.

Sounds like if you can get the T440s network driver in there you should be okay.

Hi,

I had the same issue with the L440 and found this thread looking for an answer. After fiddling around and adding and removing drivers I realised that when adding new models that do not have the correct network drivers in the PE image, you also have to "Update Deployment share" in MDT and then recreate the full image.

When this is done you have to replace the boot image in Windows Deployment Services.

This worked for me !

good luck...

Turns out my WDS was broken, thanks SPGPrintsBV for the suggestion. After I fixed that, I added the WinPE that was created from adding in the SCCM drivers and I'm now able to boot and image the machine. It looks like a few drivers are missing from the image, but nothing critical. The important thing is that I'm able to image my machines now.

Thanks everyone!

Hello, can you share the WDS fix that SPGPrintsBV provided for the WDS server.  I'm having the same issue you described.
