Win 7 x64 OSD Task Sequence generating BSOD (blue dump error) after first restart

2018-02-15, 13:55 PM

I am having issues with the X1 5th Gen but it's the Skylake (Type 20K4, 20K3) Laptop (ThinkPad).  The task sequence does not error out, the laptop just blue screens. I cannot start in safe mode either.  Thought maybe it was Kernel Mode Driver but that hotfix is in the WIM file. I have all of the SCCM drivers from Lenovo in SCCM.

I even built a fresh MDT 2013/ADK and tried building it and got the same error.  It blue screens right after the driver and OS install.  Tried both my reference image and a stock Win 7 Enterprise version. During safe mode boot it BSOD right after disk.sys with 0x0000007B code.

There used to be a BIOS setting in previous generations of Lenovo laptops that you had to change to legacy IDE before it would image properly. I have tried imaging both UEFI and Legacy boot as well as GPT and MPT.

Lenovo support says that it will run win 7 but they only support installs using their Win 7 disc and they do not allow you to download the disc image, you have to buy it and have it shipped out. I am looking to have a hardware independent image (one WIM) for all my models. My WIM is an older win 7 wim that has been patched throughout the years. Unsure if that makes any difference.

It is important to note that we are having no issues imaging these devices with Win 10 in SCCM.

Any suggestions where to look next?

Have you patched the WIM for the NVMe drive?

See this blog post for more. https://thinkdeploy.blogspot.com/2016/06/deploying-windows-7-to-new-nvme-drives.html

When attempting to inject windows6.1-kb2990941-v3-x64.msu to the wim using the same process as I use to inject updates into the wim I got the following dism error

2018-02-15 15:13:09, Error                 DISM   DISM Package Manager: PID=22792 Failed while processing command add-package. - CPackageManagerCLIHandler::ExecuteCmdLine(hr:0x80070005)

Have you tried rebuilding your reference image with this hotfix, not DISMing it in to the WIM?

Ok figured it out, had to get psexec.exe onto the device I was using DISM on, and then open a admin cmd prompt, browse to the psexec.exe folder and type in "psexec.exe -s -i cmd.exe" then do a "whoami" to validate that it was running as system, then go through my standard patching procedure and it completed successfully.

I put the BIOS into UEFI and legacy mode with CSM support, disabled secure boot. The device fully images and  completes TS.

We are cooking with GAS. Thanks!
