X1 Yoga Gen 4 Intel Serial IO GPIO Host Controller Driver issues

2020-08-10, 22:38 PM

I am re-deploying some year old X1 Yoga Gen 4 to replacement employees. I am deploying Windows 10 20H1 2004 19041, specifically Education edition. I am deploying via MDT with total control driver method. I am using the SCCM package from https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds540208 I was using tp_x1carbon_mt20qd-20qe-20r1-20r2-x1yoga_mt20qf-20qg-20sa-20sb_w1064_1909_202006.exe specifically. It seems in the last week a version for 2004 has been released. I want to report this just in case since I am still seeing it. After deployment I run the Lenovo System Update tool to get anything newer available. Everytime I run it I see the option to install the Intel Serial IO GPIO Host Controller Driver. Further almost every time the computer is restarted this message pops up:

It doesn't happen 100% of boots but frequently. It seems the driver never finished installing. This issue doesn't happen on my Gen 3 or 5 X1 Yoga.

Just in case it wasn't clear I continue to see this on devices with the latest available drivers installed.

Hi there, I also get the same issue when we try to build one of our X1 Yoga and I am getting another device from Lenovo as a comparison.

What win10 version are you putting on 1903, 1909, l2004? Patched to what version, September patch release?

Are you also using the SCCM 1909 package release in July 2020?

Yep I also did upgrade the drivers and Intel ME from the Lenovo system update tool to no avail.

Can you try another machine for a rebuild? I wonder is using the old driver set 1903 or older will make the issue disappear.

Are you also using SCCM to deploy your OS to new devices or you do it differently?

I work at a school which is on distance learning so I don't have easy regular access to these machines. I was doing this in early to mid August. I saw it on a half dozen machines. It wasn't happening on Gen 3 or 5 only Gen 4. I was putting 2004 with the July CU built in and August CU installed after the build. I was deploying with MDT (SCCM little brother) with the July 1909 package. There is now a 2004 package. We are building a bunch of new ones now with the 2004 package and 2004 with September CU baked in. I will check with my colleague on if he is still seeing this.

Thanks. Greatly appreciated as I had this raised with Lenovo too and feels like they must not saw this coming as I still haven’t heard back from them, just the usual spill of update the firmware, this and that. If you used the RTP to bring back the stock image you dont get it and if you also put a vanill OS and no drivers just winodws native drivers and update them using the lenovo update tool the annoying notification doesn’t comes back. We use sccm and the image is updated and but both of my vanilla and rtp sticks come with 1903 outdated build version and makes me think that if you built it with an older outdated image we may not see the issue than using an updated image outright.

since we updated firmware too we tried rebuilding the device and that issue went away but got replaced with another annoying message about usb host or something. I’ll ask my colleague tomorrow what exactly it was.

Hmmm thanks for getting back to me.
