rtump64x64.sys bluescreen on X1 Yoga Gen 4 attached to ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Type 40AC

2021-01-12, 21:06 PM

This week we have had reports from multiple users each with multiple times of bluescreen. We have gathered the minidmp files and in all cases the faulting driver has been rtump64x64.sys. It appears this driver is used for Lenovo USB Ethernet which is how the Ethernet in the dock presents itself. We are continuing to investigate if the issue was caused by a driver update or possibly a Windows update. We are seeing the latest driver available from Microsoft Catalog Realtek - Net - 10.43.1029.2020 this is also the latest version available directly from Realtek. Anyone heard anything or have suggestions?

Would it be possible to test going back to the version available in this package:  ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Driver for Windows 10, 7, 8, 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit) - Lenovo Support US

I realize you may be dealing with remote users so may not be that easy to verify.

Which build of Windows 10 are you on?

All the users that have reported it so far are on 20H2 - 10.0.19042.685. We are trying to determine if they recently got to either 20H2 or a CU installed. I unpacked that download and it includes Install_USB_AllInOne_KeepNewDriver_7053_8060_10039.sfx.exe and I will see if we install that what happens. It is random when the bluescreen occurs as best we can tell, we haven't found the trigger yet. Get back to you with more info as I can.

Hi!
I am also affected by this.

X1 Carbon 6th Gen, TB3 Dock

Win10 20H2 (19042.746)

Will try the older driver mentioned above when I have a minute.

So far I've experienced 3 Bluescreens.

From what I understand it's this Realtek driver (installed 08/01/2021) that's causing these issues?

Lenovo is processing a new driver received from Realtek which is version 10.44.1214.2020

Could you please try this one and let me know if it addresses the issues?

Thanks for the link!
Installation went smoothly.

Will report back on Monday, if it didn't crash by then I think we're safe :)

Okay, I just experienced another BSOD while in a Teams meeting. The meeting itself was also plagued by connectivity issues prior to the crash, specifically audio and video cutting out, and audio and video being generally out-of-sync. Highly unusual.

Apparently, this time, the BSOD was caused by Wdf01000.sys. I can only assume that this is still somehow related to the Realtek driver, because this system was rock-stable before 08/01 when the driver-update happened.

If that's the case I think it's safe to say that the new Realtek driver did not solve the problem :(

Sorry to hear that.  I will pass this back to the team.  When I checked with them they had not actually encountered BSOD issues like this.  The new driver was supposed to address network connectivity issues during Teams/Zoon conferences so I had hoped it would help your issue.

Can you confirm if this is occurring across several docks and not related to just one or two?  Is it happening to several ThinkPads or does it follow certain systems? And would it be possible to see if the issue occurs at all when not connected to the dock?

At my school it is happening on 4 ThinkPad X1 Yoga so far. 3 are Gen 4 and one is Gen 5. They are all attached to the 40AC dock in at least 4 locations (the teachers move around so it may be more). They are on Teams almost constantly so that is likely a connector for us as well.

Have you attempted to rollback to a older driver in the Windows Device Manager or download older version and install?
