Re:rtump64x64.sys bluescreen on X1 Yoga Gen 4 attached to ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Type 40AC

2021-05-03, 15:00 PM

We have this same issue. Multiple Lenovo LT models, T4XX series, X1 series, PXX series. All have had BSOD when using wired ethernet on Lenovo USB docks. We have the USB 3.0 Workstation dock and also USB C dock.

We have downloaded the latest Realtek driver which is version 10.45 found here:
https://www.realtek.com/en/component/zoo/category/network-interface-controllers-10-100-1000m-gigabit-ethernet-usb-3-0-software

I received a BSOD this morning while I was running on 10.44.xx, another user here had 2 BSOD's this morning and she was on 10.44.xx as well. We have both updated to 10;.45 now. We will run on this for the balance of today and tomorrow. If we have no further BSOD's then I would say that this driver 10;.45 is the cure to the rtump64x64.sys BSOD's that have been plaguing us since December 2020. :)

Yeah, the 10.44.XX drivers in my tests would just freeze the dock's networking port until I power cycled the dock. The 10.45.20.308 (aka 10.45.308.2021) drivers I'm using now don't crash, they just have periodic discconects that last a few seconds - usually never long enough to break the call - just short freezes.

I am sad. More testing revealed that the "micro" disconnects are still happening for me even after flashing the ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2 (Type 40AS) to the latest 1.0.8 firmware. Not sure why I had that initial period of 30 to 40 minutes with no disconnects when I tested before.

I even powered everything down over the weekend, then restarted the "cold" system and immediately jumped into an MS Teams call. I was trying to see if I could recreate a period of stability on that network port. No good, as I had my first disconnect at 3 minutes into the video call.

I'll update here if I hear anything new from the Lenovo engineers on this issue.

For me its 10.44 driver 2-3 BSODs a day.

10.45 driver 1 BSOD a day.

Very old drivers 10.20 or 10.34 are not causing BSOD but they are killing the network connection, the whole system is not working after the network crash and it took me 10-15 minutes to get it back running without power off....so the best solution atm is 10.45 with 1 bsod a day, but at least after the restart the system is running normally without network problems.

Im using a Lenovo Thinkpad T490s with Hybrid USBC-USBA Dock.

Everything is up to date with newest firmware and updates.

Hello there,
we also encounter issues on several devices,

In my case, blue screen during Teams meeting when connected with ethernet cable on dock (no problem when connecte to WIFI)

Here is our setup :

Lenovo L13 20R3 / L390

Windows 10 pro 20H2 (19042.746)

with ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2 (Type 40AS) (usb C to usb C)
Driver version 10.44.1214.2020 for Lenovo USB ethernet (which was fine on W10 1909)

Professional network

Let me know if i miss to communicate some important informations

I was trying to get the 10.45.XX driver on realtek but for now, i have a time out error when trying to download

I'll try again on monday and let you know how it work for me.
Thanks for sharing

Re:rtump64x64.sys bluescreen on P52 Workstation Dock - Type 40AN

I have BSODs from 10.45 too, had one on the 4th and another one a few minutes ago.

On Fri 2021-05-07 11:36:47 your computer crashed or a problem was reported
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\050721-39390-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: rtump64x64.sys (0xFFFFF8077291D58B)
Bugcheck code: 0xD1 (0x60, 0x2, 0x0, 0xFFFFF8077291D58B)
Error: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\rtump64x64.sys
product: Realtek USB FE/1GbE/2.5GbE/5GbE NIC Adapter

P.S.: This is from WhoCrashed, very useful utility for crash analysis. Don't forget the Windows utility "Reliability Monitor" too!

ve2mrx de k5ccg hi om

It seems we are in the same boat. Hopefully Realtek/Lenovo will release a proper fix soon.

Hi K5CCG,

From the symptoms, I wonder if it isn't a ressource leak somewhere!

For fun, I like to count the number of code-executing processors involved in the chain... It could be 5 or more just for the laptop-dock-ethernet chain!

Far from the original IBM PC that had a total of 5 (keyboard, graphics, MPU, floppy, HDD)!

73's from Martin,

I emailed Realtek on the 3rd of February on this, and it's still not working/resolved and they have not responded to my last email, this is a disaster for us with so many laptops using docks in our estate. Pish poor.

We are currently testing the following change with promising results more than 24 hours in.

  • Close any open network applications. The following will reset the adapter when you click OK.
  • Device Manager - Network adapters - Lenovo USB Ethernet - Advanced - *Priority & VLAN - set value to "Priority & VLAN Disabled".
  • Click OK

We are rolling this change out to a few more machines this morning. I will post back if it fails.

*Edit: I am not clear on what this setting actually does. We do use VLANs and everything still works.
