DS4200 and fw GT280R002-03

2020-05-08, 17:15 PM

Hello everyone!

The last firmware for DS 4200 storage is GT280R002-03, and we are currently running GT265R010-04. We are buying a new server and would like to update to fix few issues and avoid some bugs that are plenty in changelogs.

Can anyone say something about the newest firmware GT280R002-03? Did you encounter any serious bugs?

And also, is there a reason to upgade HDD firmware and could it be done while the disks are in use?

I mean Lenovo firmware releases for this storage are frustrating. Some firmwares are missing, some has ambiguous version numbers. And there are no docs regarding this, no changelogs, no recommendations as far as I was able to google. Can someone give some advice?

Our local support is unable to answer any of those questions. Thanks.

DS4200 and fw GT280R002-03

Hello EvgenyM - I haven't seen anything alarming with the G280 code. Sometimes there might be an issue downloading log bundle from the web interface. But maybe it is unrelated to the version and I had bad luck. Do you have any expansions attached to the DS4200? If yes 2U or 5U? As for HDD/SSD firmware - my opinion unless recommended by support for specific reason to leave as is. You mentioned that your local support can't help - do you have a ticket with support opened? Regards, 486

Thanks for the reply.

We will upgrade eventually and probably sooner.

I do have a 2u SFF expansion attached, there are currently 35 disks in use.

And as of firmwares - we are using Samsung 3dwd SSDs for which there are no new firmwares in the official upgrade package, it was removed few months ago for some strange reason. Some of our SSDs were with a firmware that is newer than the one that was in the official package before it was removed. And I can't understand the logic behind all that. Thanks for the tip, we are not planning to update drive firmware "just because" anyway, but there were certain problems with other vendors implementation of Samsung firmwares, so I'm curious.

As of support: yes, I had few tickets regarding storage configuration (not with this particular question), and in the end the support engineers said that they only help find broken components and replace them and do not provide any configuration assistance. Maybe it is somewhat different in other countries, but here it is so.

You are welcome. What I forgot to mention is that the disks can't be upgraded while online. Other lenovo systems support this but not the DS. I recall once specific issue with samsung ssds where a fw was reducing the capacity - which could lead to catastrophic results... don't recall the disk model exactly. As for support - in future maybe try to push case to be escalated so that you end up with more senior staff checking the details. this worked out for me, but in general as far as I'm aware config is not part of support scope but they might be able to give some insight or direction that could help.

Well, we have MZILT800HEHPV3, and for those there is a record in changelog saying that the latest firmware CH44 was removed due to some "cross loading issue". Is this what you mentioned above?

That's the FW yes - it is available I think for few models of the Samsung SSDs. the fix is in CF46 - still if it works don't bother updating - as you mentioned with samsung you never know. I had some issues even with consumer grade SSDs (EVO series where after upgrade died).
