IBM TS3200 Tape library - Encryption ?

2019-07-02, 15:20 PM

The TS/3200 is MT 3573 L4U. Product ID 3573-TL, firmware D.00 / 3.20e

Bootcode firmware .80

Will it handle backup file encryption? I did not see it in the menus.  Do I need to use another appliance/device to do encryption?

We want to use it for QStar backups, but Qstar is giving us an error about backups not encrypted.

That is an IBM unit, so for that type of support you will need to head over to IBM forums/call support.

In any case, in order to have encryption enable on that library you had to purchase that option, it was not standard, info from the link below.

https://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?infotype=an&subtype=ca&appname=gpateam&supplier=649&letternum=ENUSA08-0085

  • Transparent LTO Encryption (SEO/part number 45E3081)
  • Encryption Configuration (SEO/part number 95P5008)

>Transparent LTO Encryption (PN 45E3081 or Feature Code 5900) is a chargeable feature that provides license keys to enable System Managed Encryption and Library Managed Encryption on TS3100 or TS3200 Tape Libraries with LTO Ultrium 4 SAS or Fibre Channel Tape Drives.

>Encryption Configuration (PN 95P5008 or Feature Code 9900) is a no charge feature that should be ordered when encryption will be used in a TS3100 or TS3200 Tape Library. It includes publication updates with information on enabling and configuring the TS3100 or TS3200 Tape Library to support encryption. This feature also provides an EKM publication. Customer-initiated procedures need to be completed for enabling and configuring the TS3100 or TS3200 Tape Library to support encryption with the LTO Ultrium 4 SAS or Fibre Channel encryption-capable tape drive.

If you don't have this option purchased on the TS3200, not sure you can, but you should contact your resller that deals with IBM Hardware sales and see.

I believe the TS3100/TS3200 are now end of life products, so you may have some challenges here.
