Re:L15 AMD 2gen, can not wake up from sleep mode

2021-09-12, 2:57 AM

Hello,

A tip to make things slightly less cumbersome regarding suspending.  Using production release fedora 34 and latest bios for L15 AMD 2gen (version 1.15 shown)

With this BIOS sleeping happens with slowly blinking led on power button.  Prior BIOS versions would have constant led on the power button.

Under Gnome desktop, selecting Suspend on power menus and closing the screen, the Gnome software activates systemd  sleep mode named "HybridSleep"  In that mode the system enters sleep state and watches a timer.  After timer reaches its setpoint the system converts to Hibernate.  I use my machine with secure boot enabled, this activates fedora in kernel lockdown mode, which prevents hibernate aka suspend-to-disk.  So after 3 hours of HybridSleep (the default timer setting of 180 minutes) it won't wake up because of failure to successfully hibernate.

I plotted through google searches and could not find the Gnome configuration file to change to systemd Sleep instead of HybridSleep.  I did find how to change the HybridSleep timer, I set mine to 18000 minutes.  (Battery will discharge long before that......)  Now pressing space bar on external wired usb keyboard will wake it up as long as the battery has energy....  the file /etc/systemd/sleep.conf  has text for how to do modify it, and simply change the time setting on the appropriate line, removing the # at the beginning of the line as well.  I chose to enumerate active status for HybridSleep and Hibernate, and Sleep on the appropriate lines.

Anxiously awaiting the improved BIOS.  Will see if I can figure out getting the next kernel, 5.14 running  ahead of normal release.

So small improvement, it remains in wakeable sleep mode as long as the battery has energy, and external USB keyboard was connected before entering sleep.

I can confirm all of the issues stated here, and I wanted to point to a few threads, where this is discussed as well:

A big problem seems to be the IRB88 eating constant 50% CPU on linux, as described in this thread.

Hello,

Another thread suggested the latest kernel version, 5.14 would provide enhanced performance for AMD machines.  For fedora, THIS WEEK, acquiring and testing the kernel is very easy.  https://fedoramagazine.org/contribute-at-fedora-linux-35-audio-i18n-gnome-41-and-kernel-test-days/  Follow the instructions to download, install, and test your next kernel version!   Even I did it successfully!

Alas for suspend action commanded by clicking with the mouse on Gnome power menu,   all my L15 Gen2 AMD did was restart.  Bios is version 1.15 numeric code same as in my prior post.  The BIOS has no provision to declare Linux mode, and is on factory default settings, including secure boot active.  It is running Gnome 40.4.0

Have a great week!   Hopefully the newest kernel will make things easier for the bios team and gnome team and kernel team.

I just noticed fedora  test week for Gnome 41 is not quite over, it runs 3 more days.  I'll try that now..

I just tested the L14 Gen2 AMD 20X5 with the following Kernels

  • 5.15-0 mainline
  • 5.14.3

Sadly on both these current Kernels the problems with sleep/resume do still exist.

New Linux Kernel 5.15-rc2 is out, but for me this does not change anything.

How did you all set the Kernel parameters?

acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux acpi=noirq

I did not try any of these. Although AMD adapts the 5.15 kernel I guess Lenovo has to modify the bios respectively.

Re:L15 AMD 2gen, can not wake up from sleep mode

Hello,

With latest bios version R1KET32W (1.17)  and 5.14 kernel acquired at Fedora testing week web page, the system from default Gnome 40 mouse selection of suspend:

Power down to a "blinking led on the power button status" and IF a wired USB keyboard is connected BEFORE selecting suspend will wake up after pressing the space bar.  Main installed keyboard won't wake up the machine under blinking led suspend mode.

Other comments, installation of 1.17 BIOS was done from Windows Desktop and the Support.Lenovo "Automated Driver Update" screen for my serial number.   This time the BIOS update did NOT clobber GRUB2 boot loader installation.

TODO:  Attempt to measure power consumption after several hours of suspension (to RAM)

Comments, extending timer for HybridSleep conversion to hibernate will drive battery to complete exhaustion 0% charge displayed with reconnection to a charger, regardless of Low level settings within UPower.conf files.

Question:   How can I tell what suspend status was entered?   (Kernel.org uses terms deep, freeze, mem, and a few others,  ACPI committee uses more widely used terms S1, S2, S3.  Si0x is out there, I don't know which committee has a specification for that mode.)   [S4 is hibernate to disk.....?]

Also SELinux monitor is raising comments about wake up of the wwan card.  For L15 gen2 AMD, should I expect wwan support under Fedora today?

Keep up the good work!
