Lenovo X1 Gen 9 - Fedora and Quectel EM120R

2021-05-26, 10:44 AM

Dear,

Just bought the X1 Gen 9, with WWAN, and it is the only device not recognized by the latest kernel (Fedora 34). That's a nice start.

I can see the device with lspci:

08:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Device 1eac:1001

But that's much it for now.

I asked Quectel for the driver, and their answer was:

Hi,
Thanks for your query in Quectel forums.
We cannot provide this linux driver directly to the end user, because there will be authentication problems when installing this driver. Lenovo will launch a customized ubuntu in the future. It is recommended that you obtain it from Lenovo.
Thanks.

Didn't expected that Lenovo is going to switch to Ubuntu ;-)

Any clue?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @sbuysse

We're still completing the enablement of WWAN on the X1C9 - Quectel have been fantastic to work with and have delivered their pieces.

The Quectel driver (for 4G) and the Foxconn driver (for 5G) are accepted upstream - they'll be in the 5.13 kernel. You also need a modem manager update and I believe for the 5G modem a libqmi update. We're still working through the details of getting all the pieces together - but it's all upstream and will be in Fedora (I suspect quite soon). As an aside I believe the L860 driver from Fibocom for last years models is also landing upstream.

The piece Quectel are refering to is there is a closed source binary for unlocking the modem - which comes from Lenovo. We need it for FCC regulatory reasons - it's not something that Lenovo can bypass or point at how to bypass. The good news is we have that utility for X1C9 - and it won't be Ubuntu unique. It should work on any distro - there isn't any intent to lock to just Ubuntu. We are of course working with Canonical to make it part of the preload which we won't be able to do with Fedora (we don't modify Fedora except for documents) but we are looking at how we make it available easily to everyone.

Initially it will probably be in a snap - and I know that will cause some wailing and gnashing in teeth, but honestly it's an easy way to deliver a closed source app to multiple places. Once we've got everything figured out we'll see if we can't do something more Fedora friendly - maybe through the RPM fusion repository or a flatpak. I'm trying to avoid having to support a dozen different release mechanisms so nothing is confirmed yet.

I suspect someone will reverse engineer the unlock sequence anyway - but we don't encourage that and can't participate in that exercise. I'll also note that the utility we provide will enable you to get the maximum power from your WWAN transmitter when safe to do so - something that I don't believe has been (legally) available in Linux before. It should mean you get the same quality of experience as in Windows.

Hope that helps. I've had some discussions with the Lenovo driver team about how we can get instructions out to users for doing early testing - but we still need to go through our test team first so I can't give dates yet as to when that will be possible

Mark

Thank you very much for your detailed answer, I'll wait for Kernel 5.13, unless there is some pre release than can be tested :-)

You can take a look at the earlier effort:

Do you know any estimated dates? Need it as water to be able to use the laptop everywhere. I saw in launchpad talk that there's a snap ( dpr-wwan_1.0-wwan-test_amd64.snap ) somewhere, and this is tested succesful, so can it be obtained?

The recipe is not for em120r, as it needs fcc unlock... I have tried with arch using edge modemmanager. Aleksander, the dev from modemmanager, says that we must wait for that lenovo dpr snap

@ MarkRHPearson is there a way to take part in testing? It is a bit frustrating to search for this snap over and over and it now affects other models as well. It would have been nice if our old Lenovo wwan cards were not blacklisted. Right now there are a lot of customers that paid good price for a business laptop (with wwan) and there is no software available.

Someone at Lenovo might think Linux users are not a big customer group, but look at it this way: if you are a Linux user that travels a lot, Thinkpads used to be the ovious choice. Now I'm not so sure about that any more.

All the best, Philipp

Sounds good. I'd love to participate in tests with an EM120R inside a T14 Gen. 2 as well.
