T14 (AMD) temp11 shows constant readings

Hello dear community.

 

I have been running Fedora 32 (kernel: 5.8.4-200.fc32.x86_64) on a ThinkPad T14 with AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U, 1TB NVMe-SSD and 16GB RAM (model: 20UES00L00).

 

Recently I noticed that when the laptop is plugged in, lm_sensors shows constant readings of 66.0°C for the sensor temp11 (presumably power circuitry). This value instantly goes back to 0.0°C once the laptop is unplugged.

 

This issue has been already reported in another forum approximately one month ago, albeit on a different distro.

Since this issue hinders proper functionality of thinkfan, I wonder whether it can/will be resolved by a firmware or kernel update. Otherwise I am contemplating about replacing it with an X1 Carbon Gen8 instead.

That is peculiar - I reproduced the problem myself (both T14 AMD and Intel). 

I've forwarded the issue to the firmware team to investigate - will let you know as soon as I hear back.

I observe the same on the X1C6 running Ubuntu 20.04:

 

$ sensors

[...]

thinkpad-isa-0000

Adapter: ISA adapter

fan1:           0 RPM

temp1:        +44.0°C  

temp2:            N/A  

[...]

temp11:       +66.0°C  

 

It would not surprise me if many more models are affected. I have several forum posts in mind.

Have the same issue on both T14s (AMD) and T480.

 

As a workaround you can edit your /etc/thinkfan.conf to uncomment/paste following line:

 

tp_thermal /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, -30, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0)

 

This adjusts the sensor readings of the 11th sensor by -30 degrees.

Same on a brand new T490s with ubuntu 20.4.  Especially frustrating as despite the hardware being certified, the machine won't run without MCE temp errors on CPUs unless you configure thinkfan manually.   Adjusting tp_thermal provides no relief, it gets ignored.

      tp_thermal /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, -37, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0)

 

Only workaround is to find & configure the sensors via hwmon entries,(/sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_hwmon/hwmon/*)  but then when I sleep the laptop, these sensors "disappear" and thinkfan service breaks until I manually restart it.  These sensor entries also change if I change the bios.  Pretty much, if anything changes, if you aren't right on the config file immediately you risk your box.

Could we please raise the priority on the trouble ticket to get this resolved immediately?  Both the wrong sensor and the fact that out of the box configuration on a certified OS that Lenovo installs themselves in some regions do not properly cool machines?  I had very similar experiences on Ubuntu 18.04 /T470 so this is not new...

Seen here too, 66 degrees, remove supply 0 degrees, recoonect supply instantly 66 degrees on T15.

I have the same problem too, but with T14 Intel. temp11 is constantly reading 65 degrees. I am on ubuntu 20.10. This causes the fan to spin constantly, so it is terribly annoying as it stands.

T14 (AMD) temp11 shows constant readings

I'm facing the same issue underneath ubuntu 20.04 on the thinkpad p1. This causes the fan to keep spinning constantly even when I attempt to supsend the machine. Which fails for me due to issues with the Nvidia GPU (but hey what's new in Linux land when it comes to that haha).
