T14s (AMD) Trackpoint almost unusable

2021-02-07, 12:46 PM

After seeing no responses other than people also being affected by this bug I have to ask:

Is Lenovo aware of the fact that the trackpoint is almost unusable in Linux on the T14s (AMD)?

I had to stop using the trackpoint completely, it sometimes jumps multiple times in only a minute, often to the top left corner triggering the hot-edge overview action in Gnome. One of the selling-points for Thinkpads, apart from the Linux support being claimed, always was the trackpoing for me.

There's a bugzilla [1] report but I also sent an email to the kernel list [2] thinking I'd use their preferred way of reporting bugs.

Thanks for the note on this - I wasn't aware of that issue.

I tried reproducing it on my T14 AMD but wasn't able to. But that has a synaptics touchpad instead of elantech - might be the difference? Unfortunately I bricked my X13 AMD (long and boring story) so I'm trying to track down a X13 or T14s we can investigate on. Will see what I can find.

Yes, the two are very different in that regard.

The T14 also has intertouch / companion support in recent kernels, which the Elantech is missing.

I am experiencing the same issue with a T14s AMD. It's really quite annoying.

I am running Ubuntu kernel  5.8.0-43

I am pretty certain that this is not a hardware issue as it doesn't show under Windows.

There's a thread on reddit with users that are facing the same problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/imk7s9/trackpoint_jumps_occasionally_to_edgecorner_on/

Same here on X13, Many people (myself included) rate the trackpoint as the main selling point for Thinkpads, and this really makes it unusable. Even worse, in my case it is the top right which closes the window I am working on...

Re:T14s (AMD) Trackpoint almost unusable

I have the exact same problem. I'm running Ubuntu 20.10 on my T14s AMD.

When I'm moving the mouse cursor using the trackpoint, the cursor will instantly jump to the edge of the screen. Usually it's a corner, but I think sometimes it goes to one edge.

Disabling the trackpad makes absolutely no difference, so that's not it.

Thank you for starting this thread. I was starting to feel hopeless! I WANT to like this laptop, but between the TERRIBLE display (I sprung for the 400 nit but coming from a MacBook Pro it's just garbage in terms of display quality, resolution, and aspect ratio) and this trackpoint issue I'm seriously considering buying a replacement from another brand and selling this thing - and I've only had it for about 4 months.

Hopefully this gets fixed soon!

Same here. Unusable.

You can use proto=bare for the psmouse module which makes the trackpoint stable, but unbearingly slow (without the possibility to speed it up). Not sure which is worse.

That's funny you mention this.  I was running a Fedora 34 Beta as live os the other day and i had the same issue on my Thinkpad A475.   I don't have the issue on my Fedora 33 install though.

I ordered a T14(AMD) that other day and I hope it's smooth sailing.  I'll contribute to bug reporting if I have to though.

Thanks for the nudge on this one - I'd lost track of it so my apologies :(

I have my X13 AMD back up and running, and I could reproduce the problem. I'll do some more digging and hopefully get some input from the vendor.

Not on my T14 AMD for some reason. It seems there are multiple synaptics touchpad versions installed in T14 machines and the kernel support is only enabled for one of them (LEN2068, mine has LEN2064). Forcing intertouch via kernel parameter (psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1) fails as well.
