Who wants AMD?

2020-08-11, 16:16 PM

At the recent "Nest with Fedora" conference*, we had a poll asking about AMD/Radeon laptops like the T14 or the E series.

This thread is to gauge interest in that. Post here if it's something you'd purchase!

 * videos coming soon BTW, including of the Lenovo Q&A if you missed it!

(For what it's worth, it's definitely my preference, especially if paired with one of the higher-end mobile Radeon GPUs.)

Absolutely!  AMD's latest mobile lineup is pretty impressive on both a performance and efficiency standpoint.

Recently Lenovo's ThinkStation P620 was the first workstation with AMD Threadripper Pro -- a hopeful sign that more Think products with AMD chipsets will be on the horizon!

Re:Who wants AMD?

I was hesitating. At the moment, I find it more important to have Fedora running on the machine, then having an AMD proc+cpu. So I want to go for the more expensive P1.

If Fedora would be shipping with the T15, it would be a difficult choice. For me, an AMD proc+cpu with more memory and a 4k schreen and Fedora.. that would be ideal. But no manufacturer delivers something like that. I think it needs some more time...

I want AMD! As a current T460 owner looking at the E series as a potential replacement, the idea of Fedora support makes me look at purchasing a new E series rather than a used T490 for example.

So far it seems the Fedora and other Linux announcements have focused on bringing support to the higher priced Lenovo laptops.

What Linux as a pre-installed OS is severely lacking are moderately priced options for newer hardware.

Getting Linux into the hands of more customers at lower cost is going to increase the usage and exposure of Linux to the everyday user who, until finding Linux pre-installed on more laptops on ebay, on Craigslist or in the pawnshop, would otherwise have little to no chance of using it without seeking to install it.

Imagine if Lenovo was the brand that brought Linux to the masses rather than to the special case or limited uses it seems to currently be aimed at.

Edit Note: I got a bit derailed as this was initially about AMD support. Yes, nay, 100 yeses, please Fedora/linux support for AMD on the E series Thinkpads!

I'd absolutely want Fedora supported AMD Thinkpad's. AMD's current offering make so much sense for dev laptops. I have absolutely no need for a dGPU, so having the superior CPU performance with an integrated GPU that is lightyears ahead of what Intel offers is the perfect match for my use case.

Unfortunately, neither the X1 Carbon or the P1 Gen 3 feature AMD CPU's. While the AMD powered T-series are nice, they lack some of the premium features found in the higher end Thinkpad offerings.

I do! I would gladly buy a ThinkPad T14s AMD Fedora Edition to replace my current Dell laptop in a heartbeat. Or if we could get a X1 Carbon AMD Fedora Edition that would be stellar also but that seems like a bit of a stretch since the hardware configuration doesn't exist at all (yet????).

Thank you!

I very much would like a Ryzen option!  I'm likely to buy a new laptop in the next few months, and I would love to support Fedora+Lenovo, but I'm definitely planning on my next laptop being Ryzen.  My recent AMD stuff has aged much better than my Intel stuff.  If we get word that Lenovo is prepping a Ryzen option in the near future, I'll hold off on buying from someone else until we can see what the specs will be.

Ideally, I would like to see an option for at least a Ryzen 5 with Radeon graphics.  I would, of course, love higher end options as well, but at this point, I'm looking at Ryzen 5 as a bottom baseline.
