Will we see Fedora Thinkpads with AMD GPU's?

2020-05-25, 20:00 PM

It's no secret that Nvidia is not a great choice for most Linux users due the need for proprietary drivers that break Secure Boot and does not support Wayland. AMD on the other hand open sourced their graphics driver and it's not a part of the mainline Linux kernel. This begs the question of whether Lenovo will offer AMD GPU's as an option for Fedora supported Thinkpad models anytime soon?

Nvidia drivers can be signed for secure boot, if you choose to run that. see http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/430.40/README/installdriver.html#modulesigning

If Wayland has a requirement for a GPU vendor to support that then they are doing something quite wrong. I avoid wayland anyway, due to so many application incompatabilities

The Fedora models that will be available although you can add the proprietary NVidia driver were internally testing using the nouveau open source driver with only one issue I am aware of (sound over HDMI) which the fix should be released around the same time the laptops are available

Wayland isn't doing anything wrong. The problem is that AMD, Intel, the Wayland team and pretty much everyone else except Nvidia decided to go for the GBM buffer API while Nvidia decided to do their own thing and work on EGLStreams. Nvidia chose not to participate in the standard discussions at all and hence everyone else agreed on something that Nvidia would no go along with.

But anyway, am I right in understanding that if I opt for a Thinkpad P1 G2 with Fedora everything should work fine with the nouveau driver, including external displays, Wayland, etc?

That depends - nouveau Fedora 31 did ot work on my p53 T1000 Nvidia card back in Feb 2020.  I was forced to install the nvidia drivers, after which the system was rock steady. nouveau might have changed by now to do a better job. Also note that nouveau has no openCL support
