X1 Carbon Gen 8 with Fedora now live on the site

2020-08-29, 14:24 PM

Hi Fedora Fans,

Good news - the X1 Carbon Gen 8 is now available on the US and Canadian website.

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-x1/X1-Carbon-Gen-8-/p/22TP2X1X1C8

We expect it to roll out to the other worldwide sites as they pick it up - I'm still learning the process so don't know exactly how long that will take but I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

Many thanks to everyone for their patience - we hit a fair few hurdles (right up to the last minute) getting this up successfully. We hope you enjoy the experience of using a fully supported Fedora on Lenovo platforms as much as we do. A big thank you to the Fedora community for all their support achieving this release too - you guys rock.

The workstations will be following shortly - I'm hoping I can get that date out soon too.

If you do buy one of these let me know how your experience is - it's our first Linux platform out for general availability and we want to learn from you guys what is good and bad.

Thanks

Mark

Fantastic news! What's the best way to provide feedback?

Depends what the feedback is. Lenovo-specific things can go here; general feedback is probably best closest to where it has the most impact. For some things, that might be the Fedora Desktop mailing list https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/desktop@lists.fedoraproject.org/, and for others it might be directly to the upstream projects.
Fedora Project Leader. Ask me anything! (But please don't send me private messages on this forum. That doesn't scale! If you have a question, someone else probably does too — and someone else might know the answer better than I do anyway!)

Is there any estimate to when the P53 and P1 Gen2 will be available?

@miabbott - P53 and P1G2 should be really soon (I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks but I don't have an actual commitment on it from the websales team to be able to give a firm date)

@alemirandap - For the sound we need to look into it but I saw this patch posted to ALSA (https://www.spinics.net/lists/alsa-devel/msg114764.html) today for the X1C7 which might help with the X1C8 too - not had a chance to try it out yet to see.

Feedback - Matthew's advice above is good. On the forum works if you want to share publicly or you can message me if you would rather share privately.

Hello Mark,

do you possibly have some info about Fedora on T14/T14s?

Especially with AMD Ryzen CPUs?

Hey Mark,

appreciate we are just a little country, but any ideas as to a timeline for availability into Australia please? I just checked the webstore and can see standard gen8 x1's, but no fedora option yet.

cheers

Congratulations, it must have been a lot of work. And still 'this summer'. Although only for one machine in just two countries.

But if it is a start for a whole range of full Linux support, I'm not complaining. You have to start somewhere.

A little bit ironic though, that where I live (The Netherlands) the P1-gen2 is not for sale anymore, even before the Fedora-version has been released.

Are there any issues with with Fedora on a 4k screen? Like with the 4k option in the x1 carbon gen8?
