It would be helpful if Lenovo provided firmware updates (e.g., for DVD drives) that could be installed from a bootable USB stick. I own a Thinkpad T520 that originally had Windows 7. After I had upgraded it to Windows 8, I could not update the GT33N DVD firmware from version LT20 to LT23. Later, I replaced Windows 8 with openSUSE Leap (Linux).
In order to update the DVD firmware and the Intel Management Engine firmware, I had to restore Windows 7 from four recovery DVDs, which took a significant amount of time. I wish I could install firmware updates regardless of which operating system is installed, as I can do with BIOS updates. I can download the BIOS update ISO file and create a bootable USB stick. It would be helpful if the same could be done with firmware updates.
