Fans spinning all the time in Legion 5 Pro (and Legion 5 2021). Is this normal??

2021-06-09, 16:31 PM

I recently purchased a Legion 5 Pro and a Legion 5 and I noticed that fans are spinning all the time even under low demanding tasks. It is not too noisy but I wish it could stop while doing light work like watching Youtube or reading a PDF document. Is this normal?

They both have a Ryzen 7 5800h, RTX 3060 130w and 16GB Ram.

Thank you so much.

Hello @dreos,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

My personal machine usually has its fans spin regardless of activity.

The only time I would be worried is if the machine's fan has grinding noises or sounds like it's struggling to spin.

Hope this helps.
Regards,

Fans spinning all the time in Legion 5 Pro (and Legion 5 2021). Is this normal??

Hi, I have the y540 and I set up a new 'energy plan'. You can do that by right clicking ur battery and click on enery options. I made a plan called 'quiet' where I limit the processor to 50% ( thats 1,3 of the 2,6 base speed). By that you still have enough speed for internet browsing, watching videos etc and your fans will be a lot quieter. Also I noticed the standard energy plan 'balanced' gives very high cpu speeds when you dont even need them/not doing anything which of course leads to higher temperatures. Via MSI afterburner I noticed the temperature drops from around 60°C to less than 50°C. Dont forget to change it back to 'balanced' when you try to play games because the cpu throttle will lead in lags.

Thank you for your answers. Temperatures are actually really good. However, fans are still audible regardless of the energy plan or the heavy/light use.
Some people say they don't hear a thing with this laptop, but I'm quite sure that despite the fans are not too noisy they are meant to be spinning all the time.
Nevertheless, further information will be welcome!

What are your processor speeds when the fans are audible / when you are doing low demanding tasks? With my 'quiet' power plan the fans turn off for a while but start spinning from time to time for a couple of minutes but they are very quiet. I think it is normal that your fans are spinning since your computer wants to get rid of the heat

Fans are audible even when the CPU is working below 3% and temperatures are under 35ºC so there is no heat to deal with I guess hahaha. Maybe it's just because the Ryzen 7 5800h is way too powerful and needs constant cooling. On the other hand, RAM (16GB) is always above 30% even when just Chrome, Dropbox and Windows Defender are working.

when I say "fans are audible" I mean they are not noisy or annoying at all, it's just that you can notice them if you are in silence. It's very smooth and only turns on heavy mode when playing demanding games.

Yea 35°C is very good I think. Dont know why the fans are spinning at these temperatures. But what I am interesed in is not the cpu usage in percent but the speed in GHz. Are those values also low when you doing low demanding tasks?

2.7GHz just watching Youtube. And yes, those values are always low with light work. What is more, fans do not spin too much faster even with videogames like Bioshock or Dead Space 2.

Ok, well I think 2,7 GHz with your I think 8-core processor is a lot for just a youtube video. In my opinion the balanced power plan doesnt do very well when it comes to lower cpu usage. It could turn the speeds down a lot more for easier tasks. With my quiet power plan I am using 6 cores with 1,3 GHz and everything works just like with higher cpu speeds. If the fans are kinda bothering you just try it out, maybe it helps and also it saves some energy. I did a new topic a couple of minutes ago here in the gaming laptop forum so feel free to try it out.

I don't know if base frequency (3.2GHz) has something to do with this issue. I'll give it a try. Thank you so much for your time!!
