2007-11-30, 14:37 PM
On my screen it shows this:

STATISTICS

Average Message Rating:

Who really cares how many times I have logged in, how many minutes I was online, how many messages I have read or what my average message rating is?
I don't for one.
The only relevant info (in my opinion) I have marked in bold.

And I also will not rate any messages either.
A similar system (with giving positive or negative points, a.k.a. Karma points), and the abuse of it, caused me to give up as a moderator (after 2 years) and abandon that forum altogether.

I must be blind or dumm. I see the rating column, but haven't worked out how to rate a thread. What am I missing :smileysad:

In the FAQs it says:

How do I rate a message?
Please take the take the time to rate helpful messages. To do so, log into the Forum and look for the Rate This Message (Thread) feature at the bottom of messages and threads.

I must be blind

RBS, that's about all that a regular user sees in your profile statistics.

Wonder how they check the time. I certainly have not spent that many hours on this website!
When I'm finished with this website, I just close the tab in my browser without logging out.
Guess the clock keeps ticking.....

I believe that you are still "logged in" for 30 minutes, after which the idle timer kicks you off.

What did Confucius say: There are lies, more lies and there are statistics?

So visiting this site 4 times a day for a few minutes each time 'logs' me for a whopping 2 hours-plus !
Wish I got my payday that easy!

Goggling the saying "Lies, d**ned lies and statistics", seems to say it's been attributed to Mark Twain, Benjamin Disraeli and other dead people :) . In the pre-release version of this site I noticed that if you did not explicitly sign out then you would still appear in the "online users" list until about 30 minutes had elapsed. Does this time accrue in your total minutes online stat? Don't know but probably so.

Ok folks, I still don't see anything about how to rate a post, here's a screen shot of where it should be according to the FAQs.
The solution is however irrelevant, I wanted to give this post, started by RBS, a massive rating to show my agreement. If it don't work, or I'm too stupid, that IMO is all for the better.

All,

We are not implementing the current level of ratings for several reasons, including some of those expressed here about subjective valuations, and the overall benefit.    There is a new rating system under development, and we expect it to be more valueable to the community than the one presently in place.

Once it is available, and if it meets expectations, we plan to enable it.

We've taken this approach, rather than to start with one system, and then switch to another which would have potential implementation on ranks and permissions.

Thanks for the interest.

Ray,   and others with same thoughts...

The auto time out feature can be adjusted in duration, and we can certainly shorten it to make it a clearer measure of true online time.     Total minutes online is only one variable in the ranking system, so while there will be some "windage", I don't expect it to materially affect things for users.    Somewhere we strike a balance between allowing enough idle time to consult something in another window, get a cup of coffee, or a quick break without logging out.   If we shorten to make the minutes more meaningful, then we likely force a lot of logout / login, and as logins figure into the equation, then we are distorting another measurement.

Since all members participate under the same conditions it's probably more a releative barometer of activity than an absolute one.
