Hi
No one is misleading you. The forum software is set like that. When your stats start getting improved, your rank would automatically get improved. And once you are good enough, you could get a special rank. Tagging, receiving kudos, giving kudos, posting regularly, getting your post as an accepted solution etc are some factors which earn you plus points and upgrades your rank.

If you think a post helped you, then you can give Kudos to the post by pressing the Star on the left of the post. If you think a post solved your problem, then mark it as a solution so that others having the same problem can refer to it.

What ishaan said. Also, there's not a lot of important work to be done on a forum... ;) Granted the users here may help you achieve certain goals or fix things, it's still a community forum and not helpdesk. ;)

Forums have always kinda been like this too, but usually you can choose your own custom text below the avatar instead. Other times the ranking system is - as you so well put it - "New Member" and so forth. Still I hope you can appreciate the "humor" and imaginativity of the ranking system on these pages. It does help keep people involved - and thus the forum stays pop and lives on.

I agree with davidberman. Feels like an insult to someone working in IT for 18 years and, when at school, started with Unix mini's (Prime Computer) and 8086 XT's, on DOS 3.1 without a harddrive. Just because I haven't had a Lenovo (-problem) before and, hence, haven't been on this forum before, doesn't justify insulting people. And, as stated, as it is a setting: you could easily change the setting. "New Member" is just fine - and more professional. Just my 2 cents.

Re: What's DOS

Gosh. The first time I slid a floppy disk (when they really were floppy) into a drive, it was DOS 2.0; after it booted the machine I could remove it and insert the WordStar program disk, because there was no hard drive. That would have been just about 30 years ago this week, when they let the new students into the converted closet computer room.

So I think it's kinda funny to see that with my screen name.

What I don't find so funny is that I can't seem to upload my own avatar, which really is HAL 9000 elsewhere in the googleverse.

So now I see that I've been "upgraded" to Paper Tape after only my second post, which is insulting, since paper tape predates DOS by over a century - it was used to send telegrams (an early form of information technology) as far back as the 1840s.

At least make me Punch Card, since they were the primary human interface device on the fist computer I used, in high school.

The first draft of the list of ranks that I did had "moth" as the first rank. :)

FWIW, they just loosely go from older tech to newer but in no particular order other than than those broad groupings.

I wouldn't normally think of "moth" as a computer-related term, but having spent some time on forums as a moth to the flame, I can relate to that..

So now (at least before posting this) I am Fanfold Paper. Do the levels change with every post?

And what about that avatar - do we ever get to upload our own?

You might actually already be able to change your avatar in "My Settings > Avatar", if not I'm happy to help out as long as there's no advertising, the copyright doesn't belong to someone else and meets the following

  • 36x36 or 64x36 pixels
  • 50 kb or less
  • no animation

I'd add something about the rank, but Jane would probably swat me.

edit; typo

Like a bug!

Speaking of bugs, here is the reason I had initially chosen "moth" as the first rank in my computer-tech-over-the-years theme.  See the picture at the very bottom:

Andy, all I get at My Settings>Avatars is a pull-down list of categories, and the corresponding choices - if there is any upload option, I can't find it. If you have one, I'm guessing it's a level thing. Assuming I want one in colour, would that be at CGA, VGA, or somewhere in between? Or are we still on the bug motif and I have to get to butterfly?

JaneL, I never knew that, and my reaction upon seeing it startled the children.
