Why does it say 'What's DOS?' on my profile?

2020-10-07, 18:19 PM

Why do you think I don't know what DOS is?
Because I've just joined the forum and everyone who joins has just started with IT and doesn't know anything about computers?

That really is quite insulting - I've been working with computers since the 1980's and I'm more than familiar with DOS.
If it's supposed to be funny - it's not.

Please change my rank to something more appropriate!

Hello,

The forum ranks are applied based on activity within the forum, and are just meant to be a whimsical list in which all sorts of technology, old and new, are mentioned.  A few that I have seen are fanfold paper, paper tape, punch card, and 802.11n, and that's just off the top of my head.  There was a discussion about it from when the forum opened a decade ago:  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Forum-Housekeeping/What-s-DOS/m-p/330549

Personally, I kind of like the little trip through computer history, it is kind of nice to see those types of computer tech references instead of things like "Forum Poster Bronze/Silver/Gold Level" or "Superduper Community Participant" which seem awfully generic (and kind of boring) to me.  But, then again, as someone who has been using computers professionally since the 1970s (and remember things like loading Spacewar! from paper tape on a PDP-1), perhaps I am more charmed and bemused by such things.

If you do decide to spend some time in the forum and participate in conversations, the rank associated with your account will eventually change.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

Aryeh,

Thanks for responding.

The hardware based ones - paper tape and so on (I maintained a system where all the code was delivered on paper tape!) are fine and are much more interesting that bronze/silver/gold etc.

The blast through IT history is fun too.

But the ones that suggest the individual is somehow a bit backward in their IT skills I think are not appropriate,

Seems like customers have been complaining about this since 2010: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Forum-Housekeeping/What-s-DOS/m-p/330549?page=1

Over 10 years, and you can't change a list of names?

Great way to say FU to you customers - or is it perhaps showing that forum moderators are all still at the 'What's DOS?' level, as they are unable to fix this?

Regards

Adam

Hello,

When Lenovo acquired IBM's PC line fifteen years ago, they acquired a lot of computing history, and the ranks are just a way to honor that.  I don't think it is meant to be insulting, but rather a trip through memory lane.

Not sure you actually read my last post Aryeh, but I'll repeat it here. The trip down memory lane is fine - old tech is fun. Insulting individual's IT skills though deviates somewhat from the idea though. As I highlighted, there have been numerous complaints about this for OVER 10 YEARS. Is it really so difficult to replace just one of those ranks with some other ancient hardware tech?

Hello,

Yes, I read it?  I do not think there is any intention here to insult anyone in the forum, and the overwhelming majority of forum members have not expressed any opinions on the matter of forum rank.

People are free to post questions here, as well as answer them, within the forum's community guidelines.  There doesn't seem to be anything about forum ranks which impacts this.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

P.S.  In case you were unaware, your participation in the forum has caused your forum rank to change.

It says What’s DOS? because Mark wouldn’t let me use Moth! Like Aryeh, I’ve been in IT since the early 70’s, and I used What’s DOS? as a whimsical nod to a past that youngsters don’t know about.

@JaneL As I said to Aryeh, I totally get why you are using old computing terms for the ranks. But all the rest refer to old bits of kit - Paper Tape and so on. It's just this one - What's DOS? - that doesn't do this, but comes across as a very unflattering comment on the member's IT skills, regardless of how it was meant. There are posts on this forum where members have been complaining about this one rank for over 10 years. As there are so many other terms that can be used, why not use something else, which follows the same theme as the others and doesn't even appear to imply the member has very basic IT skills? How about this as an alternative - come up with a whole new set of rank names, and ask for votes from members? After all, the current ones have been there for 10 years, so could well do with a 'refresh'. Old O/S names would be good (and you can keep your DOS reference!): DOS, CP/M, OS/2, AmigaOS etc - many more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_operating_systems
