Re: Ideacentre AIO Y910 cooling mod. It's possible, it's done and it's amazing!

Zero,

I am trying out the same exact mod as you based on your setup.  I have the same model as you too (AIO Y910 6700 gtx 1070).  I got into the case and was ready to rock n roll installing the Arctic 120, but I realized I didn't have any way to connect the cooler/fan to the motherboard.  The existing fan has a super tiny 4-pin connector the mobo, but the Arctic 120 has a larger (more standard) 4 pin connector.

Did you have to do some soldering to make a custom connector?  Did you find an adapter online?

Please help!  i am sooooo close to making this awesome build a reality!

Thank you.

Boozey

yes, you need to re-use the tiny 4pin connector.

basically you strip the pump and fan wires to piggyback to the little 4pin connector wires. no soldering needed, just a voltage meter to make sure you connect the right wires where they belong. if not sure, get someone who knows electronics to help out.

Thanks for your help zero.  I got it all hooked up.  You were right...I had to strip the tiny 4-pin from the existing fan and then splice that into one of the Arctic fan wires.  I also mounted the radiator and fans on the outside of the case using Command velcro strips rated to 16 lbs (I used 6 out of the 8 in the box).  Everything is working beautifully!   Test results below.  Real world testing begins now :)  PUBG and AC:O here I come.

Prime95 15min run

5 runs (avg temps calculated across all 5 runs)

***Tests were done with only 1 pull fan while unit was sitting on desk.  I just installed a second fan for push/pull, so new tests may turn out with better numbers.  I will post if anyone is interested.***

Before mod

Idle:  42.1° C

Load:  87.95° C

After mod

Idle:  24.2° C

Load:  82.8° C

Gains

Idle:  -17.9° C

Load:  -5.15° C

glad it worked out for you!

your load temps are too high though, i don't like it :)

i never get above 54C right now when i'm running prime95 torture for more than 5min.

idle was 28C.

also running only 1 fan

Yeah that makes me concerned.   What program are you running to monitor temps during prime95?  I'm using free CPUID HWMonitor.  Should I use something else?  Perhaps I didn't use enough thermal paste on the pump-CPU connection??  I still haven't run additional tests since mounting the radiator and adding the second fan.  I will post results this evening.

I suspect having the system and the new cooler/fan mod so close to that wall is part of your problem. Close quarters exacerbate heat build up, especially under stress. I am interested to see what your numbers would run if you move the system 10-12 inches from all walls, just for a comparison test. I suspect they will be lower.

I also wondered about your paste application. Be advised too much is as bad as too little. Proper amount properly applied is key. But 1st thing I would do is re-run the tests with the computer in a more open area away from any obstructions.

Great Mod and thank you for the pictures and test data!

it has nothing to do with 1 vs 2 fans installed.

i suspect you don't have perfect contact of the pump surface to the cpu lid and/or too much/uneven thermal paste

dumb question: is your pump working? can you hear it?

@fullonshred: not related to the space behind the PC, this cooler is barely pushed by the system, it's really badass.

the radiator fins barely get warm at full load, so a 800rpm fan hasn't much work to do anyway.

I just ran another prime95 (which is a synthetic test anyway, not real life load) and i had 24C idle before and 48C full load:

Hi,

I am trying to accomplish the same setup. However, I cannot get the arctic 120 very easily. Looking through the forums, I am still a bit confused about what you had to do. Here are my questions:

 - The person at the computer store said that fixing the bracket onto the motherboard would be a problem, so what did you have to do the AMD bracket that came with the Arctic 120?

 - As I cannot purchase the arctic 120, what aio water cooler would be a good substitue? I took a look at H55, H75 and   H80i v2 from Corsair, would they work? If not, what other ones from different manufacturers could potentially work?
 - 4 pin connectors, fan wires and voltage meters were mentioned above. I really don't understand what you have to do! Can anyone please explain?

Thank you!

Hi,

I installed this mod on my Lenovo AIO. now every time i start up my system i get the following error message. Error0135: System Fan Failure. i can just press F2 to continue and everything works fine, but im wondering if anyone else is getting this error, and if i did anything wrong with the wiring.

Thanks,

Hi,

I also, instead this mod on my AIO with a corsair H55, although there aren't any software and boot problems, I realised that my back panel is popping out, with the edges near the camera impossible to close. This is not a problem, but it is not aesthetically pleasing either. Does anyone else have the same problem? Who has a solution?
