Legion T5 Desktop (i5-10400) Ram Upgrade Problem

Hi,

I have tried to upgrade my ram from 16GB to 32 GB for my Legion T5 28IMB05 Desktop (i5-10400).

All my three attempts below failed to reach 2666Mhz which is what the stock ram (2X8GB 3200mhz) performs.

  • Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200mhz (2x16GB), runs at 2133mhz
  • PNY XLR8 DDR RAM 2666mhz (4X8GB), runs at 2133mhz
  • Kingston HyperX FURY 3200mhz  (2x16GB), runs at 2400mhz

I learned that XMP is NOT supported on this machine.

BUT according to your support information, the Kingston DDR4s should be compatible, yet it runs at 2400Mhz.

I know that I won't gain more performance from the ram upgrade, but a degraded ram speed is really a disappointment.

I flashed the latest BIOS today (24/NOV/2020), and it does NOT make any difference.

Any suggestions other than getting rid of this machine on ebay?

Thanks,

Brs

Re:Legion T5 Desktop (i5-10400) Ram Upgrade Problem

Hi,

Try installing the same RAM modules beside each other instead of staggered.  That worked on my T5.

Best of luck.

Edit:  Hmm judging by the CPU-Z screenshot, the Kingstons might not have the 3200MHz setting in their JEDEC table.  Moving the modules around might still be worth a try.

Re:Legion T5 Desktop (i5-10400) Ram Upgrade Problem

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, but that did not help.

The stock ram is clocked at 3200mhz (runs at 2666mhz) and occupies A1 (slot#1) and B1 (slot#3).

It is also suggested to populate A1 (slot#1) and B1 (slot#3) first to enable the dual-channel feature.

Edit:

My goal is not to reach 3200mhz but 2666mhz.

To reach 3200mhz would require XMP2.0 in the BIOS setting that increases ram voltage from 1.2v to 1.35v

Hey, did you ever get any clarification on this? I'm trying to upgrade the ram in my 90NC0020US but I'm relatively inexperienced and worried about making the wrong purchase. Thanks!

Re:Legion T5 Desktop (i5-10400) Ram Upgrade Problem

I also had purchased the same PC. Only mine came stock with 8GB of 2933MHz RAM. I installed 4x8GB sticks of 3200MHz after seeing multiple spec sources on Lenovo stating that it would read at the highest supported speed of 2933MHz. However everything, included the stock 8GB all read at 2133MHz. I did both chat and called the Lenovo support. Both reps told me to do basic stuff and then said they could not help. Starting to doubt this is an issue that will be resolved without replacing the processor as well as the motherboard......

Funny it is advertised as a gaming desktop but then with benchmarking it scores lower than an average workstation....feels like it was advertised incorrectly. With cost of components skyrocketing I figured I could have something that would do nice in a pinch instead of building a machine from scratch. Punishment for an impulse buy.

The issue is that because the included Lenovo 3717 motherboard doesn't allow XMP, you have to rely on the default/JEDEC/PnP profile speeds on the new RAM modules. Some brands/lines have their default speed at 2133Mhz, some at 2400Mhz, and very few at 2666Mhz. I only found one type of "gaming" memory with a 2933Mhz default speed, which was this HyperX kit: HX429C17FB2K2/16. However, that's been discontinued, so the next best thing would be a 2666Mhz default HyperX kit like this one: https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/HX426C16FB4K2_32.pdf. Notice the list of JEDEC/XMP timing parameters on that spec sheet. That's what you need to look for.

Re:Legion T5 Desktop (i5-10400) Ram Upgrade Problem

I've researched this subject for a while, because it seems many people have trouble upgrading their ram on Lenovo computers.

All Lenovo desktops use 1.2V memory - the default DDR4 voltage. However over 90% of the memory sticks sold are at 1.35V - this is the overclocked voltage and it doesn't seem it's supported by Lenovo motherboards. So, using memory sticks at 1.35V could create problems, an unstable system or they will automatically be forced to run at a lower voltage and they will get a slower speed. Some sticks can officially support both voltages and run at full speed at 1.35V and at a lower speed at 1.2V.

You can find here some compatible memory stick with your system:

Re:Legion T5 Desktop (i5-10400) Ram Upgrade Problem

Can this be fixed by getting a new motherboard? I have read about people having this problem with the AMD version of this desktop it’s the 26AMR5 version and there ram sticks run at not the full potential

Re:Legion T5 Desktop (i5-10400) Ram Upgrade Problem

from everything I have seen this is the best answer to this question, we can't go by plugging in a module and hoping it scales down to where it should we have to be more vigilant and seeing where it scales down in a standard 1.2v JEDEC plug and play setting the modules that cmille30 listed should fix the issue. I say should because honestly nothing seems 100% with our Mobo.
