Legion 5i Tower: will 2TB M.2 Gen3 PCIe SSD work? Mushkin Pilot-E

2021-02-20, 4:36 AM

Does anyone know if a 2 TB NVme solid state drive will work in the Legion 5i Tower with an i7 processor?

I bought one but it hasn't arrived yet.  I just noticed that it says the M2 slot says it supports a 1 TB NVMe solid state drive but doesn't say anything about a 2 TB one.

Mushkin Enhanced Pilot-E M.2 2280 2TB PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe 1.3 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDPE2TB-D8

Will this work?

Probably.  The capacities listed in the Lenovo specs is what they have tested/certified and sell with the system, not what is possible.  Enter your system model into the Kingston and Crucial websites to see what they give as certified for your system upgrade options.  Ideally you want consensus, but Kingston trends more conservative.

I called Lenovo Support and was told that it wouldn't work in my computer.

Basically the technical support are just document checkers and have no real knowledge about the computer.

I received my 2 TB Muchkin NVMe solid state drive and installed it anyway,

No problems.  It installed properly and works fine.

Just be careful with the mounting screw.

There's a screw installed at the 40 MM site which you use.  But also remove the base because it sticks too far up and will hit the card when it goes over it.

With the clearance now made the card installs without hitting the other base.

The computer immediately recognized the 2 TB drive.

So you can put a NVMe Solid State drive larger than the 1 TB which the Lenovo documents say that its only up to 1 TB.

That information is wrong and I thought it really made no sense to begin with.

However, I thought maybe Lenovo did something in the BIOS that would cause that limitation to only 1 TB.

There is no limitation and a real technical support person would have known that.

That's why Lenovo Technical Support is really not there and they only know what the read, which you can do yourself, you don't need them.

Lenovo Technical support is a joke.  Beware.

Thanks for posting this.  I too have found there tech support to be lacking when it comes to getting information about their PC and its capabilities/

Thanks.

It's disappointing that what used to be the IBM PC group which had some of the best technical people is now so lacking.

I'm now getting a lot of Window's errors (old blue screen) on boot up.  Something I may have to start the Windows install all over again to solve.

Probably should have built my own but the price was too tempting from Costco to pass it by.

Hopefully it will get better.
