Need help upgrading my Legion T5-28IMB05 and i have some questions.

2021-01-08, 3:00 AM

Hi i just got my Legion T5-28IMB05 Desktop for xmas from my wife and was wondering. what upgrades are supported for it? I have my eyes on the 5H40X63310 but cant find it anywhere, was thinking of upgrading the ram both on the speed side and the capacity, maybe the cpu to a i7 unlock. Also the interior ambient light wont come back on when i restart the pc i always end up doing it manually its like the setting wont save after after shutoff. anyways thanks in advance for the help.

Hi hungrypanda5490,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Here's the system specs and upgrade possibilities for the T5-28IMB05:

Memory Slots

Four DDR4 UDIMM slots, dual-channel capable

Max Memory

Up to 128GB DDR4-2933

Storage Support
Up to 2 drives, 1x 3.5" HDD + 1x M.2 SSD
• 3.5" HDD up to 2TB
• M.2 SSD up to 1TB
• Optional Intel Optane Memory Integrated with SSD, M.2

The B460 chipset that your CPU is on does not support overclocking. So getting a i7 that's unlocked will not work.

Regards

Hello,

I too have a question regarding the RAM on this system. While it does state it goes to 2933MHz, specifically what requirements does the RAM need to meet as i have purchased 3200 mhz and 2666 mhz kits and they seem to all run at the base 2100 mhz. From what I could see in the BIOS this system doesn't support XMP, so what type of memory is required since the system seems to be doing an overclock automatically?

Thanks

Memory will only run at the speed that the chipset supports. So if the chipset support 2933mhz, then by buying 3200mhz, the system will automatically downgrade it to run at 2933mhz.  Lenovo rarely has any SPD/XMP profiles for memory, if any, so if your ram gets downgraded all the way to 2100mhz, then I'm not entirely sure why that is.

To find upgrades and accessories please see the guide below:

This is the official guide on getting OEM(Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts:

How to Look Up and Purchase Accessories, Upgrades, and FRU/CRU Replacement Parts
Using your serial number in the parts lookup can get you the OEM whitelisted part number and other compatible substitutes if available.

For Replacement Part pricing and availability

Doing a quick lookup on motherboards, there's only listed 2 Intel Comet Lake B460.  Still, desktop computers have more freedom to swap motherboards then what laptops does. Unfortunately I can't at a glance see what kind of ATX size the motherboard is, and since it's not documented, it's hard to say what motherboard size fits in these pre-built Lenovo desktop computers.

Can you find out, then? Several people have this issue and have posted in the forums about it, and every time you reply, nothing is solved. Can you do us all this favor and try to find out the cause/solution to this issue? I know we would all greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

So are we locked into those parts only? Because my system came equipped with Samsung memory stamped at 2666 and it’s running at 2933 so the board is clearly capable of some sort of over clock. And buying memory at specifically 2933 doesn’t seem to be readily available or at almost more than double the cost per 8gb. If you can find out anymore it would be greatly appreciated I know these forums are full of this issue. Thank you for your time.
