Review to upgrading GPU and PSU for Legion C530 (Cube)

2020-04-25, 14:27 PM

I would like to share my opinion after finishing an upgrade for my Legion Cube.

What came out of the box:

  • GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
  • 450W PSU
  •

What I upgraded to:

  • GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER 8GB by Gigabyte
  • Corsair VS650 80+ White 650W

PSU Upgrade:

From this post I learned that not all GPUs will fit inside the Cube case. In the post they mentioned that Gigabyte's RTX 2060 Super will fit nicely. And they were right. The GPU just barely fits in, and you honestly can't go much larger than this. So check the dimensions of that card, and compare the card you get to them.

In the photo below you see how the PCIe cable is poking out of the case and how the GPU is really near the edge of the case:

So overall, it really sucks that you are limited to the size of the GPU, but the installation & replacement of the GPU in the Cube is okay, just a little bit more difficult than a regular case because the outer side of the GPU (where the ports are) is hard to insert in the slot that the Cube has.

PSU Upgarade:

Here is where I really felt like I got screwed over. The back side of the Cube has a non-metal cover that can be removed. In the photo below you can see how it has a slot for where the PSU electricity cable goes, and the slot is exactly the size of the plug, meaning that if your PSU power cable entrance is placed anywhere but that back-cover slot, you wont be able to insert it.

Moreover, the Out of the Box PSU didn't have an on/off switch, and the new one did have, so when I tried to close the back-cover it would place the switch in the middle (neither on nor off).

So I just had to take the back cover off, and now I'm working without it.

Also, it is a real hassle to work the cables from the PSU side to the Motherboard side, especially if your cables came with thick protective coating since they have to be squeezed under the HDD holder, which then can't be closed properly because the cables of the PSU running under it are thick. I had to close it a little bit aggressively - it didn't feel healthy.

The saddest thing is, that deep down I regret getting the Cube just for it's cool look, I should've gotten a normal regular good ol working case so I can be able to upgrade easily.

I hope this post helps someone in need and provides feedback to Lenovo.

Thank you.

I'm not sure I understand your question, sorry. But the info about the model is in the post above.

I have a C530 too and interested if you managed to sort out the PSU in the end or if you are still using it without the back cover?

@Neo71 still using it without the back cover. Not experienced any direct problems because of that, but I suppose dust accumulation is greater because of the area that is exposed.

Hello,So I am currently deciding to upgrade to a 2060 super from a 1050 ti with a c530 case and wanted to know if you know exactly what type of model fits in it? Do you think the 8GB one would fit in it or could it be any type of 2060 super? Do you think those 2 cards I linked would fit? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TDN1SC5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iDdyFbAG23VGB

Thanks In advance!
