T530-28ICB - Upgrade CPU from i3 8100 to i7 9700: Windows won't boot

2020-09-13, 11:15 AM

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade my Legion T530-28ICB (modelno. 90LJ00DAMH) CPU from the i3 8100 to the i7 9700, but when I do this, I can't boot into Windows. The boot gets stuck on the Legion screen with the spinning circle, but then completely freezes. I've tried to do a clean install of Windows with a USB drive, but here it also freezes on the Windows logo with the spinning circles with the new CPU. With the i3 it does boot correctly.

I have already updated the bios to the latest version on the support site (O3LKT23A - 12/11/2019), but it's still not possible. In the BIOS I have selected Load optimal settings, but that doesn't seem to solve anything. I have also done a check with the Lenovo UEFI diagnostics, but everything seems to be fine with the motherboard and the i7 CPU. I am able to load into Linux, but not Windows for some reason.

In the specs sheet of the T530-28ICB I've seen that there are pc's with the i7 9700 so I would suspect this should work. Is there anything else I can try? Or is the motherboard that comes with the i3 8100 model not compatible with the i7 9700?

Many thanks in advance!
