Re:T7 34IMZ5 BIOS Update Failed with 7/15/21 BIOS Update

This is ridiculous, sucks that the only reason I went prebuilt was due to the lack of available 30 series cards.  I should probably just take the nuclear option and replace the motherboard with something that doesn’t suck.

Update: The Lenovo technician replaced the motherboard, as expected it came with version O4LKT1BA (4/15/21).  Unfortunately the 7/15/21 update will not apply, It appears that Comet Lake is going to continue to be treated as 2nd class citizens.  Really disappointing.

I'd really like somebody from Lenovo to weigh in on this, as someone who has owned a lot of Lenovo systems over the years I am really bothered by the lack of engagement and support with customers.

The list goes on and on with loads of promise and no actual action

I've stopped posting as its a complete waste of time.

First and last lenovo computer. Worse than dell and that's saying something .

To be fair its working OK so really shouldn't complain but for all the spiel on the website about gaming pedigree......WHAT A CROCK OF HORSESH#T 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The lack of support, and communication regarding updates is getting a bit tedius.

one other thing I learned in another post is that because of this two different bios even though both comet and rocket lake use the same motherboard if you wanted to install a rocket lake at a later date to take advantage of PCIE gen4 (faster m.2 drives etc.) which the motherboard supports you actually cant as there is no way to get the rocket lake bios onto a motherboard with the comet lake bios as the system wont boot when you change cpu.... this really should be addressed.

Try flashing the same version on top of itself. Might be worth a shot:

From: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gaming-Desktops/i9-CPU-issue/m-p/5068245?page=1

Good news I found a fix in the meantime. The BIOS version the PC was delivered with was O4LKT19A, so the latest one. I re-flashed the BIOS with the same version but prior to that I disabled a specific setting that prevents flashing the current or an older version. After this the CPU is listed with max speed of 5.3 GHz instead of 4.3 GHz as per the initial screenshots.

Now with the BIOS thing:

- my current PC was shipped already with the latest BIOS version O4LKT19A. It might seem very counterintuitive to flash it with the same version but for me this was the fix

- first of all see this link: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/de/en/products/desktops-and-all-in-ones/legion-series/legion-t7-34imz5/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS%2FUEFI

- download the file to your local computer

- to enter BIOS you need to restart or to power on your computer. When you first see Lenovo logo on the screen you have around 2 seconds time to press F12 key before Windows starts loading

- You need to go to Security tab (left menu), then to select Secure Roll Back Prevention to No (by default it is Yes) - with this setting you can then flash the BIOS with the current version, otherwise this setting prevents it

- Press F10 which means Save and Exit, confirm.

- Let Windows start and execute the file you previously downloaded from Lenovo drivers (o4ljy19ausa.exe). This will flash the BIOS. It takes few minutes so let it run and do not turn off the computer in this time. When the flashing is done the computer will automatically restart. Let the process finalise until you are back in Windows

- Enter BIOS one more time. This time select the Exit tab, choose Load Optimal Defaults and confirm. Then choose Save Changes and Exit (or press F10)

Re:T7 34IMZ5 BIOS Update Failed with 7/15/21 BIOS Update

Your post made me do a little research as I've wanted PCIe 4.0 support, too and figured I would never get it with this PC.  What I found is that there are a total of 6 system boards available for our systems.  These 2 show up on the original parts lists (I'm assuming the original T7's released late in 2020):

  • CometLakeZ49 - part number 5B20W27650 mfg part number SBB0T21819
  • CometLakeZ49 - part number 5B20W27650 mfg part number SPP0V29804

These 4 show up on the lists with Rocket Lake processors (I'm assuming the newer release):

  • Rocket Lake Z490 - part number FB20W27658
  • Rocket Lake Z490 - part number FB20W27659
  • Comet Lake Z490 - part number 5B20W27665
  • CML Z490 - part number 5B20W27664

In looking at the earlier PSREF it shows support for 2ea PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x4

The newer PSREF (7/15/21) shows support for 1 ea PCIe NVMe, PCIe 4.0 x4 and 1 ea PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x4

What I don't know if if any parts beyond the two Rocket Lake Z490 boards will support PCIe 4.0 x4 - that's the good news.  The bad news is it looks like you can't purchase either one of those right now from Encompass parts.

Just my theory - but there may be different bios flash files for the Rocket Lake Z490 boards and those are the only ones that support PCIe 4.0.  Hopefully one of the Lenovo experts can help us.

Hi, where did you find the old driver? Seems I only have the newest available (used your link)

I also got the non descriptive return code: 129

Just to confirm, the latest firmwares for the CML SKUs (Comet Lake) is the same for the latest update packages.

I wish Lenovo could keep the updates separate as to not to confuse users seeing how important a firmware update is!

Once again, Lenovo releases a new BIOS update and the Comet Lake T7 customers are treated as 2nd class citizens.  I can't say that I will buy another Lenovo or recommend one in the future.
