Upgrade T530 (AMD version) CPU and GPU

2020-09-06, 21:02 PM

Hi,

I have the Lenovo T530 (AMD version) and I would like to know if I can upgrade my graphics card to the new 30 series Nvidia cards (ie. 3070 or possibly a 3060 if released), and also what is the fastest/latest AMD CPU I can upgrade to with my motherboard?

Thanks!

McKay

Hi there McKay,

The Lenovo T530-28APR - Machine Type : 90JY has the AM4 and B450 Chipset :

You should be able to upgrade to any 3rd Generation Ryzen (Zen2) CPU.

  • Example: (Ryzen 7 3700X 8 / 16 3.6G / 4.4G 4MB DDR4-3200)

As far as the graphics card upgrade to the new 30' series goes. You should have the flexibility with a desktop machine to be able to do this, though we do need to take into consideration the size of the new series and your PSU required. They are quite large and will most likely require a lot more power.

These are the dimensions of the PCIe 3.0 16x :

  • Slot 1: full-length full-height (length < 312mm, height < 111mm), PCIe 3.0 x16.
  • So a little less then 32 cm long and 11 cm high. I reckon they mean width here.

The RTX 3070 has these dimensions:

  • Length - 242 mm (24.2cm)
  • Width - 112 mm (11.2 cm)

You might be a bit low on space when it comes to the Width of the new 3070. '

Specs on the RTX 3080/3090

When it comes to the PSU. The T530 only has a 450 watts, autosensing, 85% PSU.

The Recommended Power Supply for the System is 650W for the RTX 3070. This will leave very little for the rest of the system.

I'd highly recommend getting a better and higher Power Supply, to at least a minimum of 850W.

That being said. The 30 series of GPU's coming out is made for the PCIe 4.0. Though they are backwards compatible. You will not yield the entire benefit of the card, but I also doubt there will be any games coming out in the next year or so, maybe two, that will be able to take full advantage of the power the new 30 series brings to the table.

Hope this helps answer your question and clarify some things.

Regards

Voithos
