Upgrading storage on T540 desktop

2020-01-25, 17:00 PM

Good morning,

I just purchased a T540 Gaming desktop. I would like to add a HD in addition to the 512GB SSD that's on it. I've scoured the Lenovo site and can't find data on whether there's a space for one, and what size I would need.

Can anyone tell me what size drive I would need, if there's a space for one, and if I would need anything else in addition to the drive. I was looking at a Seagate FireCuda Gaming 2TB Solid State Hybrid Drive Performance SSHD – 2.5 Inch SATA. I just can't tell if it will fit or if I would need anything else in order to put it in.

Thanks for the help and have a great day!

Heath

Yes the 2.5'' and 3.5'' drives use the same SATA data cable.

Hello HeathM98 and welcome to the Lenovo community forum,

A 3.5'' hard drive but that is not to say it can not install a 2.5'' drive, would need a 2.5'' to 3.5'' adapter though.

Edit: Yes, also if adding a drive you will need to get a SATA data cable to connect to the motherboard.

For information on how to install a drive take a look at page 62 of IdeaCentre T540-15ICK Gaming Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Cool, I couldn't tell from the manual the size. Forgive my ignorance, I've spent the past decade in the bliss of Apple ignorance! ;-) But with the 2.5 to 3.5 adapter, the cabling is the same between the two sized drives? I saw that page in the manual, but it was talking about switching the drives. I was thinking it was referring to the existing SSD. But after a little research it appears that installs on the motherboard and is a different animal.

Sooo, I'm assuming that when I open this baby up, that slot in the manual will be empty. So if I buy a 2.5" HD and a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, I should be good to go? The cables to connect it will be sitting there with nothing connected? Just trying to line up all the purchases at once so I'm not opening and closing this thing as I figure out that I didn't get everything I needed the first time.

Thanks for your help,

Heath
