Upgrading the Legion Tower 7i Gaming Desktop

2021-06-09, 1:43 AM

Hello,

I just ordered the premade Legion Tower 7i Gaming Desktop. I'm pretty new with computers, so I need a little help finding the right hardware to upgrade it. I was hoping to increase the ram from 32 GB to 64, and put in another 1 TB SSD. I may have found a solution for the ram but not the SSD.  This desktop will be used for heavy GIS work and gaming. I want 1 TB SSD for GIS work and 1 TB SSD for gaming.

Also, is this ram compatible?

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/memory-and-storage/memory/MEMORY-BO-32GB-2933MHz-ECC-SoDIMM/p/4X71B07148?cid=us:sem|se|google|gs_smart+shopping_1po|gs_accessories||4X71B07148|12879957833|122331432235|pla-1243706980476|shopping|brand&gclid=CjwKCAjwqvyFBhB7EiwAER786ZgBmJr-BRf1KfiHaPSwdJJqwOhIW3_9wBHLoq4IZ2yCQPL58bsZyBoCfBwQAvD_BwE

The specs say that it requires DDR4 2933MHz ram, so I guess it wouldn't matter what size it is? I'm sorry if these questions are dumb, but I've never upgraded a PC before. I want to make absolutely sure that I'm doing everything right.

Thanks,

-Kiernan

That memory is for a laptop.

I upgraded mine to 64gb with the following from Crucial:  Crucial 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4 3200 MT/s (PC4-25600) CL22 DR x8 Unbuffered DIMM 288-Pin Memory - CT2K16G4DFD832A

As far as SSDs go, you can install a 2nd NVMe drive or an SSD.  I have the following in mine:

  • Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB NVMe (boot drive)
  • Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe - 2nd NVMe drive
  • Samsung SSD 860 EVO 2TB Sata
  • Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB Sata

Hope you enjoy your PC - I've had mine for 5 months and really like it.

Hey, so I got my computer. I'm very satisfied with it, but I can't seem to find the slots where I can install additional SSDs. Does anyone know where they are? I can only locate the ram.

They are on the back side of the computer - circled below in red.  Mine came with the brackets and screws.  I needed to purchase a couple of SATA cables and power splitter for the power connector from the power supply.  I took this picture after installing the drives and while I was waiting for the needed connectors.

Cool. Do you know if there's a 750w power system that's compatible with the Legion71 Tower? I need something compatible with an rtx 3080 graphics card.

I put in a Corsair RMx 1000 and it fit fine.  I'm sure the 750 would fit, too.  I did have to loosen and move the 3.5" HDD bracket to install the power supply and connect the cables and then I was able to put the HDD back in the original location.  I recommend mounting the Corsair upside down so that the fan is on the bottom of the case.  They are designed to be mounted either way.  The 1000 came with really great cables and they were just barely the right length for the Legion case.  It should be enough power for a single 3080 GPU and a full complement of memory and drives, along with all of the fans, etc.
