Wireless Disconnects all the time on Y700 Tower.

2017-01-11, 19:22 PM

I have a Lenovo Y700 (Y700-34ISH Desktop (ideacentre) - Type (90DF0097UK) Tower.

The problem I am experiencing is constant Wireless dropouts.

In single player games (played fullscreen) everytime I return to the Desktop I find that I am not connected to the Internet. I have also had disconnects whilst trying to play Gears of War 4 online and from Steam as well.

This is most annoying, and the weird part is once I manually click on my Wireless symbol in the Windows 10 system tray, it will connect again automatically.

Prior to my current Wireless problem I installed the Lenovo Companion software, which did a Wireless driver update, that actually caused my Windows 10 to crash, when the Wireless became unresponsive.

So on a restart I had Windows Update perform an update on my Wireless driver from Device Manager.

Which leads me to my current problem.

My Wireless model is:

Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 Wireless Network Adapter.

Driver Date: 19/09/2016

Driver Version: 12.0.0.281.

Hi GaryRT

Maybe you can give it a try re-installing the driver from the support page of the Y700.

- Qualcomm Atheros Wireless Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - Desktop - 12.0.0.278 - 29/9/2016

My other idea will be try to update the driver with "DriverEasy", but that is not supported by Lenovo, so it will be under your own risk (Do it only if you feel confortable installing / uinstalling drivers). Remember to create a restore point first.

Regards

Hi thank you for responding to my post. I took a look at that program, and it does look interesting.

I decided to try a couple of things since posting originally to see if they would help.

As my Router transmits in both 2.4 and 5 ghz, I switched from the 5 ghz broadcast to 2.4 in Windows (from the System Tray).

I also unchecked the box in the Wireless Properties box (in Device Manager) that allows Windows to turn it off to save power.

(Whilst no other devices have had problems staying connected on 5 ghz, the signal on 2.4 had an extra bar so I thought why not it can't hurt.)

Since doing both of these my Wireless seems to staying on, I would need to do something continuous online like game to be sure though.

I have a bad feeling that the Wireless on this Tower might just be terrible, as I had a Laptop that had terrible Wireless a couple of years ago with the same brand.

Hopefully it is / was just Windows 10 doing something annoying?

Unchecking the "Allow The Computer To Turn Off This Device To Save Power" box under Device Manager/Network Adapaters/Your Wireless Adapter/Power Management settings most likely fixed it. It is ridiculous of microsoft to have that checked as default. 95% of the complaints I receive about wireless disconnects are solved simply by unchecking that stupid box that should never have been checked to start with.

Also, be aware that while 2.4 Ghz has greater range, it has a lower maximum speed than 5.  If it is possible to locate the router closer to the system, that could help it stay connected in 5 Ghz mode.
