Y900-34ISZ-90DD: Upgrading installed Samsung SM951 256GB SSD with Samsung EVO 970 or EVO 970 Plus

2020-06-18, 19:23 PM

I want to replace the factory installed SSD Samsung SM951 256GB M.2 NVMe PCIe4x3.0 Key=M by a Samsung SSD 1TB M.2 EVO 970 Key=M or Samsung SSD 1TB M.2 EVO 970 Plus Key=M.

The upgrade SSD must be capable to operate as bootable systemdrive C:\.

I want to upgrade just with Samsung SSD. Is there already expertise  with the EVO 970 (Plus) installed.

  1. can this be done ?
  2. what about temp. issues ?
  3. what about performance issues, interference with other parts in the system ?
  4. what about BIOS level, Firmware level of SSD in Lenovo system, NVMe driver required (upgrade) ?

I expect to clone the original Samsung SM951 NVMe 256GB to Samsung EVO 970 or EVO 970 Plus.

How can this be done:

For cloning a second drive is needed, as options I see:

  1. external adapter USB3 to M.2 NVMe PCIe3.0x4 and SSD EVO 970 (Plus) installed in adapter
  2. installing (temp) a PCIe card on the motherboard with conversion to M.2 NVMe SSD cardslot(s) and SSD EVO 970 (Plus) installed
  3. defining a virtual drive on SSHD. The cloned SM951 NVMe SSD can be saved on the virtual drive (on SSHD 2TB).
  4. Software needed: Macrium Reflect and Samsung Magician

I appreciate to get comments on this.

Can this be done, what needs special attention ?

Thanks in advance,

Wim

Yes this can be done without issue

what about temp. issues ?

The temperatures would be aproximately the same as the current 951

what about performance issues, interference with other parts in the system ?

No interference, and speed wise, if you go for the bigger sized NVMe then you would get a small speedboost

what about BIOS level, Firmware level of SSD in Lenovo system, NVMe driver required (upgrade) ?

Nothing to worry about, only thing i would recommend is to reset the BIOS settings if you encounter any issues first time booting up with the new disk

  1. external adapter USB3 to M.2 NVMe PCIe3.0x4 and SSD EVO 970 (Plus) installed in adapter

This should be the cheapest option, and easiest

  1. installing (temp) a PCIe card on the motherboard with conversion to M.2 NVMe SSD cardslot(s) and SSD EVO 970 (Plus) installed
  2. defining a virtual drive on SSHD. The cloned SM951 NVMe SSD can be saved on the virtual drive (on SSHD 2TB).

I believe samsung actually has a licensed application you can use to migrate to a samsung branded NVMe SSD

Re:Y900-34ISZ-90DD: Upgrading installed Samsung SM951 256GB SSD with Samsung EVO 970 or EVO 970 Plus

2020-07-06, 13:20 PM

I cloned the factory  installed Samsung (Lenovo) SM951 SSD to Samsung 970 EVO Plus with Macrium Reflect Free. The 970 EVO Plus was installed

in an external USB3 to M.2 NVMe PCIe4 adapter. The size of the c:windows partition was enlarged to maximum size, taking into account

the other partitions installed  on the factory supplied Samsung SM951 NVMe.

 I did following steps:

1.Cloning

Layout of the cloned SSD on 970 EVO Plus

part1 System (none)

           FAT32 /. 260.0 MB (LBA) / Primary (EFI partition)

part2 (none) unformatted Primary

           Size 128.0 MB

part3 Windows (F) (none) NTFS Primary (in external adapter while cloning) Size change 238GB to appr. 1000.0GB (-minus size other partitions)

Size Source SSD: 237.12 GB to Target App.1GB minus (size: part1+part2+part4)

part4 WinRE_DRV (none) NTFS Primary

           Size 1000.0 MB

Macrum Reflect Free signal Clone Succesfull.

2. After Cloning installed 970 EVO Plus into M.2 slot of PC.

3. Power-ON PC, Blue Screen, StopCode INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE

Checked the BIOS via Power-ON press F1

BIOS 01ZKT45A BIOS Date 11/07/2017

May be BIOS, DRIVER 970 EVO Plus missing or Cloning Error ?

I cannot start Windows, I will make USB stick for booting from USB.

Power-ON pressing F2 does not provide access to installed 970 EVO Plus.

What to do to solve this problem ?

Did this problem also occur with other upgrades ?

Used

Macrium Reflect Free

External USB3 Ewent 7024 Gen2 M.2 NVMe Adapter / Enclosure

Thanks,

Wim

Re:Y900-34ISZ: Replacing original Samsung SSD with larger Crucial

2020-07-08, 11:51 AM

I have cloned the original Samsung SM951 NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD to Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD.

I uses an external USB3 adapter for SSD Key M.2 PCIe NVMe.

I can access the new SSD when installed in the external USB3 adapter.

In that case the SSD can not be booted from the USB.

When I replace the Samsung factory installed SSD bij EVO 970 SSD, I get a INACCESSIBLE BOOT DRIVE

error after POWER-OFF and POWER-ON reboot. After STOP ERROR Blue Screen with different options.

The PC cannot boot withe cloned SSD Samsung 970 EVO Plus installed.

This should be no problem.

I used Macrium Reflect Free, most current version (until date 07-07-2020).

It could be a simple error, may be reset UEFI to default values and restart

or it could be Macrium Reflect Free or problem with external USB3 adapter.

The problem still exists.

Looking for solution.

Checked

  • Macrium Reflect Free doc
  • External USB3 adapter doc / did FW adapter update for specific Samsung SSD Migration Tools

Crucial recommends using Acronis:  How to Transfer Your Data from a M.2 PCIe SSD to a M.2 PCIe SSD If Your System Only Has One M.2 Socket

@ BiggAl

Thanks for yr advice.

I could not answer earlier.

I just solved the issue.

In principle the procedure to clone is the same for most packages one can use.

The issue was probably caused by incorrect EFI partition for booting the new SSD.

I corrected the boot issue in the EFI partition of the new SSD.

Now the system booted correctly.

No issues on this subject.

Thanks.
