i5 6400 to i7 770K

i don't know so much about these things, so i have to ask. i have bios version O2DKT23A and i5 6400 cpu.. if i wanna upgrade to i7 7700K do i have to get a specific BIOS update or can i put in a 7th gen now with this version? or am i going to be able to do it at all?

Greetings and welcome new Lenovo forum user from Sweden,

 

If you are going to should upgrade to i7-6700 as that is what the motherboard's Intel H170 chipset is setup for along with continued Lenovo's support for your Y710 Cube would be broken somewhat for instants Spectre and Meltdown microcode patches specifically crafted for Skylake processors given via Lenovo Support.

 

Edit: Another thing to add is a Intel H170 chipset does not allow for overclocking of the CPU so an K model or other wise know as Unlocked would be not access that attribute.

but a cpu with K is faster in baseclock right? so im not able to get I7 7700K? and im not sure if im reading it right at all? But will able to get an i7 6700k?

Yeah the difference between 6700 vs 6700K is a higher base clock of 0.6 Ghz and slightly higher turbo clock speed of 0.2 GHz and yes the they both will function just no overclocking for the K model.

Really the tangible reason to go i7 over an i5 is Hyper-threading for the added virtual cores.

yeah but 0.6 ghz faster is worth it, if i wanna buy a new cpu i wanna max it out :D
