4K 120Hz 10Bit RGB/4:4:4 + HDMI cables

2021-09-09, 1:22 AM

Has anyone been able to achieve 4K 120Hz 10Bit RGB/4:4:4 signal from ANY Legion laptops?

I got Legion 5 15ACH6H (82JU004ACC) with (supposedly) HDMI 2.1 output & LG C1 OLED. Goal was to send 4K 120HZ 10Bit RGB or 4:4:4 signal.  Tried 2 HDMI 2.1 certified cables (Anker & Zeskit) and could not get higher than 4K 120Hz 8Bit RGB or 10Bit 4:2:0. A few people seem to have same issue with Lenovo (even Pro version). No help from Lenovo support - all they could tell me is output is 2.1… At this point I assume that output is limited to 32 Gbps as this is how much it takes for 4K 120Hz 8Bit RGB according to bandwidth calculators.

Second question is about HDMI 2.0 cables. I can get 4K 120Hz 8Bit RGB (total bandwidth 32gbps) through this HDMI 18gbps cable https://www.costco.ca/wirelogic-sapphire-3.60-m-(12-ft.)-high-speed-hdmi-cable%2c-2-pack.product.100671363.html. I can play games at this setting with no dropouts - no different than with HDMI 2.1 cables. I also tried some old cheap cable i had around and same thing - it works. Does anyone have any idea how is this possible?

4K 120Hz 10Bit RGB/4:4:4 + HDMI cables

Yes, I`m waiting for the answer about 4K@120Hz 10Bit 4:4:4 too. As for cables: HDMI 2.0 cables and HDMI 2.1 have the same construction. The only difference is that you could possibly have glitches using HDMI 2.0 cable while sending 40-48 GB/S signal more than 3 meters long. So certified HDMI 2.1 cable gives you an assurance that the problem (when you have glitches) is in something else.

I recently bought the same laptop, Lenovo Legion 5 and I have the same problem with my LG CX TV. Can't use RGB 10 bit with 4K 120hz.

What's the point of the HDMI 2.1 then? Im using a certified monolith 48 gbs cable, got all drivers updated and Im using pc mode and hdmi deep colour in my TV.

I saw more people online with this problem so seems like lenovo faked the specs and its not hdmi 2.1, I can do the same with a HDMI 2.0...

Im not sending it back because price/performance is really good, but its sad to see false advertising.

Same here.  I have the Legion 5 Pro with 16gb RAM, 3060 RTX, and HDMI 2.1.

I literally bought this thing for the sole pupose of it being my media player, feeding my LG CX tv at maximum settings (4k, 120Hz, 10bit RGB 4:4:4).   How disappointing that no one from Lenovo who knows the engineering of these laptops has been put forward to address/explain this issue!  There is OBVIOUSLY a shortcoming, hardware or software - we don't know, given the superficial specs of these laptops.

This really sucks, I also bought it to use it with as my media center with those settings and it's a shame that it's not real HDMI 2.1. And the fact that Lenovo doesnt care about it is even worse...

Re:4K 120Hz 10Bit RGB/4:4:4 + HDMI cables

Hi, I asked to Nvidia technicians and they told me that 4k 120hz 4.4.4 10bit it's supported only by RTX Quadro, and not by our RTX. Also I asked why there isn't 4.2.2 and they told me that companies can choose these settings. But games support 8 bit but Photoshop and others program can support 10-12 bit so it's not useful 4k 120hz for Photoshop 😂

The main question is how about there isn't 4.2.2.

Thanks for you answer.

If it can't make 4k 120hz 10 bits either with RGB or 4:4:4 it's not HDMI 2.1, so its fake specs from Lenovo and Nvidia. You get the same options than an HDMI 2.0b

It can do 4.2.0 8-10 bit, support vrr and also all 2.1 connection, and 8k.

I reported only what Nvidia told to me, so I don't choose laptops components. I think, if is a software limit, we can ask to Lenovo technicians to update to 4.2.2.
