Advice on adding SSD please.

2020-05-25, 13:51 PM

Could someone please advise me if possible on two points? I have a Lenovo Legion Y530 and I have recently upgraded my RAM from 8gb to 16gb to great effect.

I would now like to add a 500gb SSD to compliment my 1TB HDD.

Firstly, will this affect the operation in any way of how the Intel Optane works? somehow I do not think so, but worth checking.

Secondly, rather than cloning my OS and everything over to my new SSD I would rather do a clean install. I have downloaded my recovery media in preperation of doing this.

Is it as simple as wiping the HDD and then entering recovery media and directing it to the SSD?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Scott.

You will need to add a M.2 SSD.

You will need to create a bootable USB in order to clean install Windows 10. You can do it with the free Ventoy app.

Alex,

I have created the bootable USB thanks. Before I reinstall do I wipe the current HDD with the operating system on it? or do I wait until the new operating system is up and running on the SSD and then go in and wipe it?

Thanks,

Scott.

Alternatively you can clone your existing drive onto the SSD and make the laptop boot of the SSD.

It may be tricky since you're switching from a drive running in SATA/AHCI mode to PCI-e SSD.

If everything goes well, you can use the in-built factory reset from within Windows 10 to get a clean OS.

If you don't want to clone your current Windows 10 from the HDD to the SSD (take a full image copy of your HDD with free Macrium Reflect and restore to the SSD),

and still want a clean install, take out the HDD, install Windows 10 on the SSD, put back the HDD and format.
