BIOS update [ BNCN41WW ] Updated Date: 2020-11-30 - Lenovo?

2021-02-08, 2:09 AM

Hello Lenovo employees. I would like to hear from you explanations about why today, in updates both on the website and in Lenovo Vantage, is showing the BIOS update for the Yoga series products? Given that I have a product from the Legion series.

Can't say why Vantage is offering you BNCN41WW.

When I check the Y540-17IRH support page today, I see BHCN41WW: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/legion-series/legion-y540-17irh/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS%2FUEFI

If, after looking at the readme at the link above, you feel the need to update your BIOS, you can do so by downloading the exe.

Regards.

It's strange, in Lenovo System Update the product is called (BHCN41WW), but when you open the readme file, it says (BNCN41WW) and that it is for Yoga series laptops. The same is in Lenovo Vantage.

So I don't really want to try updating. Since how do I know, what if I download it now, update it and my entire system crashes. And this is my work laptop and there are very important files to me.

Re:BIOS update [ BNCN41WW ] Updated Date: 2020-11-30 - Lenovo?

My laptop is Legion Y540-15IRH.  Early last week, I found the same BIOS update online but Lenovo Vantage did not report it.  I have double check today (after reading your post) and found Vantage finally report it.

I am glad you caught the differences in Readme vs actual BIOS file.  Good eyes and nice to see people are paying attention.  Usually, I am very caution as well; like, I usually hold off for few months and see if there were any major case reported by others.  When I finally decided to do it, I will then verify all relevant information like you.  Thanks for the headup.

While Googling, this is what I found.

Just to share my way of updating BIOS / Firmware:

  1. Download the exe file from Lenovo website.  I never do those update through software like Lenovo Vantage.  Reason: BIOS / Firmware is really sensitive and risky if NOT run separately with the least interferences.
  2. I will shutdown any software running in the background (as much as possible) to avoid issues.
  3. I am using Kaspersky Anti-Virus.  It's smart scanning can keep track of all files it scanned.  I will scan the exe file once to avoid interference from Kaspersky.  If your anti-virus do not have that type of feature, I think you should consider disable it during the installation process.
  4. Unplug any / all external connections like USB, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.  In odd cases, if the update exe file is poorly written, external devices can interfere as well.
  5. Ensure the power supply is plugged in and you got more than 50% battery left (assuming your battery is functioning normally).
  6. Run the exe file separately with Administrator Rights.  Read and follow all instructions CAREFULLY, do not deviate from them, and be patient.  Reason: Any interruption, corruption, or unsuccessful update can leads hardware failure (to boot up properly).

I might sound like crazy, but I have few incidents (2 with BIOS, 1 with GPU card, and 1 with Firmware) in the past with another laptop and my rig.  In worst case scenario, you need to bring the hardware into the shop where they have devices to flash them directly without Windows (not all cases are applicable; some might not support and needed to replace the entire chip - including burnt out chip).

Hope this help.  This is a community forum and I am an user like yourself.

You should obtain technical support from Lenovo service center as the main resources.

Hello guys,

Same question here, should we make the update? And why the update appears yesterday and has the date 30.11.2020?

Legion Y540-17IRH

I've stopped using vantage because it closes games while I am playing.

Thank you!

Up, they screwed with the update and have no answer lol

This bios bricked my laptop and the service center of Lenovo here in UAE Dubai is super slow It's already a week I submitted the laptop and when I track the work process, it's still waiting for activation.
Update: Service center replied they are waiting for approval from Lenovo to start the repair, keep on sleeping. Never gonna buy Lenovo again. Thank you
