Buy the lenovo y720 or not ?

2018-07-18, 22:54 PM

Hi everyone , I am planning to get a new laptop mainly for heavy gaming and some word office work . I have seen alot of mixed reviews about the lenovo y720 and i have been saving for over 2 years to get a laptop so i dont wanna waste it on a troublemaker . I need it to last me at least 4-5 years from now . I am a light user so i am not really going to destroy the laptop and won't be overclocking or doing any of that weird stuff (coming from intel hd 4000) i will be glad to run games at any fps higher than 40 . But i am buying the gtx 1060 so it doesn't get obsolote in the next few years . So is the lenovo y720 a good deal or not ?

(The only ones availabe in my region and for my budget are the lenovo y720 and dell 7577)

sorry for my bad english in advance

Hey HuNTeRpLieR,

Really happy that you're checking out the Legion products and welcome to the community! This question depends on a lot, but the first question I have for you is what kind of games are you looking at playing?

I just recently got a Y520 with an i7-7700HQ and the AMD Radeon RX560 and for the games I play I'm extremely happy. I'm able to play League of Legends on max settings with consistent 100+FPS and Overwatch on high settings with consistent over 60FPS (I haven't tried anything over high but I'll give it a swing and get back to you if you'd like). I have played a little Fortnite as well and I just bought CS:GO so I'm hoping I'll get great performance on those games as well. Overall, I'm really happy with the device. Looking back, I think I should've opted for the 1050Ti, but I am still really happy with the performance I get for the games I play. The other thing I'm very happy about is that the computer runs at really low temperatures and the fans aren't very loud. They can be a bit noisy if I choose to turn them on turbo, but with a headset on I don't notice the noise at all and I very rarely turn it onto the turbo mode. Since it's a gaming PC, it is a little bit heavier than what I was used to, but it's not so heavy that I can't take it anywhere and it fits into my backpack, but I really dont take it off my desk all that often.

So whether or not it is worth it largely depends on the games you plan on playing. If you need that extra kick and it fits your budget then definitely grab the Y720. I also recommend checking out the Y530 because the new look is really nice and it has some really nice added features from the previous series as well as a GTX1050Ti which is still a solid card, but if you're really looking for that kick in performance then the Y720 is better for having the GTX1060.

I hope this was helpful and I'm happy to answer any other questions you've got!

The weight is no problem for me . The y530-730 arent available in my country and the shipping costs are mad . I am looking to play heavy AAA games (The Witcher 3 - Deus ex mankind divided- Quantum break ) High settings isnt a must . Upgrading from intel hd 4000 . I will be happy with any setting as long as it gives me 60 fps and as i said i chose the gtx 1060 so it can last me a good while before it comes obsolete

The GTX1060 is a very solid choice then. You definitely won't get ultra graphic settings out of most of the AAA titles, however you will definitely be able to play on medium to high settings with pretty solid frame rates. I think you're going to be really happy especially since you're upgrading from integrated graphics. Keep us updated on how you like the purchase and remember to review the product!

So i ended up choosing the lenovo y720 and i am impressed . Solid performance ,Steady gaming and good thermal management Although the middle-left part of the keyboard gets a bit hot but nothing too concerning Cpu - Gpu never exceeded 80 degrees so far ( Sniper elite 3 - Assassin's creed unity ) Brightness isn't as dim as people claim . It is not to bright either but i found it to be perfect as it as Mouse out of the box was laggy but the update drivers fixed that problem Best things in this laptop is the rgb keyboard and the dolby sound although i can't find out the dolby app i am supposed to install but that is a topic for later Overall : very satisfied with the laptop ++A

Im sorry to say this but you might soon regret your decision. Atleast i do and will never buy Lenovo products again. Have been using HP computers for a long time and the Y520 is my first Lenovo laptop and im dissapointed with this $1000 garbage.

Well first thing i noticed were the hinges started making cracking sounds after a few months, the touchpad drivers are crap and i updated the drivers too but it randomly stops working. Wireless adapter has been causing issues lately. Has random freezing issues while browsing even though i have updated all drivers, bios and have the latest version of windows 10. As far as gaming goes, it works fine but im really dissapointed with the build quality considering its an expensive laptop. Barely had any issues with HP and their laptop build quality is solid. I hope you have good luck with Lenovo.
