Can I use a 144hz external monitor with my Legion Y540?

2019-08-09, 21:03 PM

I know this has been discussed a lot, but I can't seem to find an answer for my specific model.

Recently I bought a Legion Y540 with RTX2060 and an I7. I'm planning to buy a external monitor with at least 144hz and some kind of "sync" feature in the near future. I have done some research and found that connecting an external monitor through miniDisplayPort 1.4 (which my Y540 has) should be able to support (more than) 144hz. However, when looking at this spec sheet, under the graphics section, it says the following:

supports external digital monitor via HDMI, Mini DP or USB Type-C;

supports three independent displays;

Max resolution: 3840x2160@60Hz (HDMI); 7680x4320@60Hz (Mini DP 1.4); 3840x2160@60Hz (USB Type-C)

All connections show a refresh rate of 60hz. Does this mean an output of more than 60hz is in no way supported for my laptop?

I also have the option in the BIOS to use "discrete" graphics, instead of "switchable" graphics. I believe this has something to do with it? Also, in Lenovo Vantage I have the option to enable/disable hybrid mode, but I'm not 100% what this does.

Can anyone shine a light on this?

Thanks in advance.

I've got the Y540-15IRH 2019 model (15 inch, GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, built-in 144hz monitor) and I'm using an 144hz external monitor from ViewSonic (model XG2402), connected through mini DisplayPort. And it works like a charm, also with G-Sync enabled. All I had to do was manually set the refresh rate to 144hz once after connecting the monitor, enabling G-Sync in the NVIDIA control panel and enabling "AMD FreeSync" in the monitor's OSD. When I check the refresh rate in the OSD of the monitor now, it says that it's set to 144hz. In-game the displayed refresh rate switches permanently, so that's a sign that G-Sync is enabled correctly.

I can't tell you if this would be the same with your model, especially because my laptop has a built-in 144hz display. But I don't believe that this is relevant for the refresh rate on the mini DisplayPort.

EDIT: hybrid mode is disabled in Lenovo Vantage, so the NVIDIA GPU is permanetly working in my unit.

"All connections show a refresh rate of 60hz. Does this mean an output of more than 60hz is in no way supported for my laptop?"

If your y540 display is 60 hz there is no way to upscal to 144 hz.

Check your display settings.

Thank you both for the reply.

I realise I cannot upscale the built-in display from 60hz to 144hz. However, from what I have read on the internet this is different than connecting to an external monitor, since the external monitor would connect directly to the GPU, and therefore bypass the Intel driver.

As RaymanXY stated, his Y540 model does work with an 144hz monitor. I looked up the spec sheet for a model that does have a built-in 144hz display. For this model, the spec sheet also shows 60hz for the connections.

This brings me to the conclusion that the 60hz is not representative for the max output to an external monitor. Maybe it is an indication of max output when connecting as a screen expansion instead of pure single output? Just a guess.

I think it depends on the resolution. For example it's not possible to get 144hz @ 7680x4320, but for lower resolutions it works.

Hello , thanks for the info would you kindly specify which cable you are using exactly? I cannot seem to make it work I have tried an HDMI cable and then tried a USB-C to HDMI still only getting 60hz. I have contacted Lenovo Support and they seemed certain that the laptop can only output 60hz. Regards Ed

Hi there,

I have a Y540 with 1660ti and i5 9300h and 144hz built in screen.

I can confirm it does indeed output at 144hz to an external screen.  I'm currently using a USB-C dock that I bought from amazon that has an HDMI port and it is running at 144hz (Unfortunately the dock is not able to provide enough power through USB-C for this laptop, so you still need to use your PSU)

personally I have used mini display to DVI and still 60hz on the external monitor, I have then used usb-c to HDMI and also 60hz on monitor, so that hub you are talking about might be the solution !
