Can i use HDD on Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 82EY00MFTX?

2021-06-12, 23:25 PM

Hello. I am confused about that question since couple of days ago. I'm planning to install additional Hard Drive into my Ideapad Gaming 3 82EY00MFTX laptop. This machine has 2280 NVMe SSD and i learned some of these computers can't handle the 2280 form factor without taking out the Hard Drive Bracket. But some of the folks did managed to mount the NVMe storage without taking out the HDD Bracket. So i'm very confused. Does my laptop come with Hard Drive Mount Bracket, and can i upgrade my storage without sacrificing the 2280 SSD? I'll be very appreciated if you can help me.

(The video that i'm talking about).

By the way; due to the time difference between USA and Turkey, i might be late for your responses. If so, please forgive me.

From the image of the IdeaPad Gaming 3 82EY below (clipped from videos linked below), it looks like there is enough clearance between the 2.5" SATA connector and the 2280 mounting screw for you to install a 2280 drive without any problems.

Below are P/N for the bracket and cable needed to add a 2.5" drive, which are usually not included on systems not originally configured with a 2.5" SATA drive.    I included links to images of the parts, and one source I found for the parts online.

Note:   If you are going to install the the 2.5" drive yourself, be sure to use only non-metallic tools to pry the base cover open, and unplug the battery before doing any work inside.

Hello @hardwaremuffin,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Based on the PSREF page of the machine it indicates that the machine can handle up to two drives, 1x 2.5" HDD + 1x M.2 2242/2280 SSD.

This means it should be able to handle the 2280 M.2 and a 2.5HDD.

As for the HDD bracket it would be best to open the machine and check if it is included.

If it is not included the part number is 5B40S21897 if you would like to purchase one.

Hope this helps.
Regards,

Thanks for the help folks. By the way; there's a HDD Upgrade Kit came in the box, does that mean it also includes the hard drive bracket? I know the best way to learn is looking inside the laptop but it's brand new and i'm known for breaking things since my childhood :D So i don't want to risk it.

Hello @hardwaremuffin,

Sorry for the late reply.

If the machine contains a hdd upgrade kit it should have the bracket included.

But again the best way is to check if you have it personally since some machines do not come with the bracket by default.
