Dual GPU Switch and Freeze Problems

2018-03-19, 14:57 PM

Hello everyone!

So I don't have to go in to a long and arduous explanation of the issue I am currently experiencing on my Lenovo Y720, please see the following link to the issue raised on Intels forums...

https://communities.intel.com/thread/119093

This problem seems to be facing a massive amount of gaming laptops across many different manufacturers, including many Lenovo laptops with dual GPU’s.

Further digging shows the problem seems to mainly be with systems running Intel CPU’s + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070’s.

The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, the discrete GPU is triggered which causes a 0.5s freeze.

This happens a lot, and if like me, you have just spent $2000 on a laptop, it is incredibly frustrating!

The only workaround so far seems to be downloading TrayPwrD3 using the following link…

https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3

This .exe runs in the background and keeps the Nvidia GPU alive, but also drains battery faster. It also renders Optimus totally useless!

Supposedly Intel seems to be working on a fix for release at some point in March/April 2018.

Are there any others out there in the same boat?

Does anybody know of any other fixes that could help this issue?

Is Lenovo even aware of this issue, and if so, what are they doing to rectify it?

Any help out there would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there, I've been experiencing some graphic issues with my W540 since win10 1709 update. Also notice the issues raised on intel and microsoft forum. While researching for a solution, I found your post. I wonder do you have other symptoms like cursor hangs/spinning and window flickering animations(see gif attached)?

Detailed symtoms are descripted in my post here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/W540-graphic-stutters-and-cursor-hangs-after-win10-1709-update/m-p/4016885

Haven't found a viable solution. Don't know if Lenovo is aware of the issues. I guess we will be so lucky if lenovo+intel+nvidia+microsoft find one soon:(

Hey T0d,

Sounds like the same issues I have been experiencing to the letter.

I did speak with Lenovo customer services yesterday and they have stated that they are aware of these issues, as have Intel.

Both have stated that there is a fix in the pipeline.

Whether this comes under the guise of a update direct from Intel at some point soon, or as part of the Spring Windows 10 update, who knows.

Rumor has it that this fix will be released sometime in March or April this year.

I know that Intel have been aware of the issue since around the same time last year so it could still be a while.

The workaround stated in my last post is definitely working for me, with no further lags or freezes.

I know it’s not a proper fix, but it should help with the frustration until the issues are rectified by either Intel or Microsoft.

Give it a shot and let me know how it goes.

Peace out!

Thanks for your reply murdobytes. Really glad to know they are working on a solution. I did try the workaround, but it didn't seem to ease my latency issues. In fact, I started to notice my flickering animation issue is more likely caused by the incompatibility between HD4600 and win10 1709, rather than the switchable card problem. And the cursor issue has existed since win8.1 (I tested my backup drive, it was there, just less noticeable). Anyway, hope they can make our lives easier so we can have more fun. Cheers!

I have the exact same issue with my Yoga 720 i7 7700k Nvidia 1050. That issue started happening right after updating Windows with the April update... absolute disaster. Reverting is impossible since Windows has already deleted the update backup yesterday, so I am now reverting to factory settings with fingers crossed.
